Hamlin, PA - Blockbuster 6th Annual Two-Day Sizzzler Electrifies Hamlin Speedway Weekend
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Doing things the proper way elevated the Hamlin Speedway another notch above the rest as the successful promotional team of Denise and Randy Smith ushered in their 6th Annual two-day Spring into Summer Sizzler over the past weekend at the Hamlin Speedway located near the junction of Routes 191 and 590 in Hamlin, Pennsylvania. The Blockbuster weekend of racing activities brought out 121 entries for the Friday night racing and followed up Saturday with 144 entries for a two day total of 265 entries topping last year's numbers of 98 entries on Friday and 126 on Saturday. For the Smith Family, who have long standing ties with the greater racing community, the two day event proved to be the icing on the cake for their promotional efforts as they took over the shuttered Hamlin facility in 2006 and through hard work and vision and a dedicated work force, the speedway has been resurrected into one of the top speedways in the country for small division racing action. The now famous picnic, a roaring bonfire and the exciting on track racing action provided the tons of fireworks throughout the record setting weekend at the speedway. The threat of rain on Saturday did nothing to deter the great crowd on hand and as the cars pulled onto the race track for hot-laps the sun came blasting though the clouds to give indication this was truly a weekend for the racers.
The makeup feature for the All-Star Slingshot racers from May 21st kicked off the main events. The hottest Slingshot driver in the country Simon Egan continued to have the hot hand and and big right foot as he powered his way to his sixth triumph overall in the 2011 racing season. Cody Kline was the runner-up with Billy Clark in third, John Pantis fourth and 2010 Empire champion Charlie Lawrence completing the top five. The make-up Wingless 600 Micro feature followed and it was Garden Stater Jeff Hartman finding the magic to claim the feature win in his Hyper hot rod and the $750.00 top prize that went along with it. Mike Carber was the runner-up with hard charging Brett Michalski claiming third place money and Shelby Harper and Brian Carber completing the top five.
Ryan Smith won the regularly scheduled 270 Micro main with Joe Smith, Robbie Watson, Tommy Kunsman Jr and Matt Mountz completing the top five. Bullville, New York's Tommy Zwart made his lone appearance of the weekend count as he scored his first career win at Hamlin in the Junior Slingshot showcase event. Chris Kurtz was the runner-up with Zack Weisenfluh, Dylan Martin and Kyle Gruber next in line. Justin Brewster captured the Rookie 600 main event over Rick Perone with Austin Burke, Tim Howell and James Morris following. Marc Daniels borrowed a ride to capture the Super Slinger main with Wes Hearn continuing his great work at the speedway to nail down the runner-up spot with Aaron Henneforth in third, Bob Clark in fourth and Jimmy Johnston completing the top five. The Rookie 270 main was captured by Makenzie Harper over Scott Avery and Hayden Miller.
Don Schmidt became a first time career winner at Hamlin when he captured the Slingshot main event in a stellar drive over a the toughest Slingshot field in the country. Youngster Danny Buccafusca continues to impress with a solid runner-up finish and not to be denied was Eddie Strada as the South Canaan sensation drive to an impressive podium finish. Cody Kline was fourth and Charlie Lawrence fifth to complete the top five. Super Slinger champion Paul Ennes, Mike McLaughlin, Shannon Smith, Simon Egan and former track champion Billy Clark completed the top ten finishers. Wes Hearn raced his way into the main event by capturing the B-Main.
Brett Michalski raced to a convincing win in the Wingless 600 Micro main as we over a very stout field of talented drivers in doing so. Ryan Smith, Brian Carber, Jay Hartman, and Mike Carber rounded out the top five. The second five consisted of Ryan Greth, Mick D'Agostino, Kyle Lick, Jordan Tittle, and Billy Clark. Tom Kohler raced his way into the main event with a win in the B-Main.

The speedway swung back into action on Saturday night with two make-up features from May 21st for the rookie open wheelers. In the first Bernville's Hayden Miller established himself at the point at the drop of the green flag and led all twenty laps to claim the win with Scott Avery in the runner-up role and Makenzie Harper and Ron Pierson completing the top four finishers. Jacob Hendershot led the first ten laps of the rookie 600 main make-up until spinning out. Justin Brewster inherited the lead and lead the remainingl;aps to claim the victory. Austin Burke finished second with Jamie Czekai and Larry Mekic in third and fourth and Jacob Hendershot storming back to claim a fifth place finish.
"The Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh was on the money with a wire to wire triumph im the Junior Slingshot main event. "Thrillin" Dylan Martin provided the competition when he broke through late in the event to challenge but settled for the runner-up role. "The Midget" Chris Kurtz rolled into third place with Jacob Dunn and Thomas Strupp completing the top five and newcomer Kevin Predmore Jr making a strong impression with a sixth place finish after running with the leaders until trapped behind a lapped car.
Super Slinger racing found Wes Hearn wielding the hot hand as he drove into the lead at the drop of the green flag and never looked back to claim his first Hanlin Speedway victory.
Aaron Henneforth silently drove through the field to slip by second place man "The Harmony Hurricane" Roger Collins to finish second with Collins in third in his return to the Hamlin facility. Tommy Vroom Jr raced to fourth place and hard driving Henry Anderson completed the top five positions.
Mike Casario utilized a front row starting spot to grab the lead at the start of the 270 Micro main and led every lap to claim the victory in a superb drive for the roses. "The Hurricane" Harlee Schaffer was in for a great runner-up finish with Connecticut's CJ Heinig in third, Joe Smith in fourth and "The Aviator" Robbie Watson rounding out the top five. The rookie 270 Main followed and Scott Avery and Hayden Miller locked up in a dual for seven laps until they got together with both requiring wrecker service to remove them from the racing surface. On the restart, Makenzie Harper drove away from the field to claim the win with Ron Pierson second, the returning Missi Seip in third, Paul Rimsky fourth and newcomer Alyssa Riker completing the top five.
Justin Brewster led the first fifteen laps of the rookie 600 main event with Tim Howell following closely behind. Howell picked up the pace when Brewster came into lapped traffic and surged ahead to claim the win with Larry Mekic in the runner-up role and Brewster finishing in third. Jamie Czekai and Steve Van Valkenburg completed the top five.
Troy Langendoerfer hadn't been enjoying his best success on the speedway until Saturday night. A malady of problems seemed to always curtail his racing efforts but the Honesdale youngster put it all together with a sweet drive in the All Star Slingshot main event to hold off the best in the business in the world of Slingshot racing. A few anxious moments were encountered throughout the running of the feature event as the S&S Speedway gunslingers Shannon Smith and Simon Egan came rushing hard seeking victory as well as former National Slingshot Champion Cody Kline. Langendoerfer bobbled a couple of times but no one could gain an advantage as he righted the ship quickly to maintain his slight advantage over the field. A caution on lap-23 slowed the field and on the restart Smith utilized a top of the raceway pass to slip by Langendoerfer but another caution slowed the action and the field reverted back to the lap before. On the next restart Langendoefer played defense and he protected the top and Smith dove to the bottom and nearly pulled off the pass again but Langendoerfer held on and raced to the victory in close finish over Shannon Smith, Simon Egan, Cody Kline, Mike McLaughlin, Charlie Lawrence, Bill Clark, Don Schmidt, Kyle Rode and John Bockhorn.
The HTMA 600 Pro Series event had 44 of the best Micro drivers in the country doing battle on the 1/5 mile Hamlin surface. After a dual heat format established the top 16 starters, a 24 car starting field duked it out for 20 laps in a B-Main event that added the top eight to the starting field with Mike Dicely being added due to his point status in the series. Brian Carber started from the pole and led every lap of the 30-lap headliner to claim the victory but the event was a wild and wooly affair as every single inch of the speedway real estate was utilized by the drivers to make their move to the front. No one could buy the real estate as the talented racers had to drive hard to earn it. Carber did lose the lead one occasion as "Flyin" Ryan Smith was relentless in pressuring first Jonathan Hull and then leader Carber as he took over the lead only to lose the handle and get connected with another car to end his splendid drive. When the racing went back to green, Shane Lewis slipped by Hull to move into the runner-up slot to finish second with Hull in third, Brett Schoenly in fourth and Billy Clark completing the top five. Sixth through tenth were Brett Michalski, Mike Carber, Luke Thomas, Ryan Wilson and defending track champion Bobby Butler.
Eric Bodine captured the B-Main shoot out in a solid drive over Shelby Harper. The B-Main was halted on a couple of occasions but the most serious was a wild tumble taken by 2010 rookie 600 champion Joe Kata as a mad scramble in front of him blocked the racing channels and Kata got up over a wheel and got upside down. Kata was shaken in the scary incident but climbed out of the damaged racer under his own power. Kata later took a trip to the hospital to check out his vitals signs and was cleared to return home. The Kata Family would like to thank everyone for expressing their concern and offering help at such a critical time. Joe is at home resting after the ordeal but is anxious to return to the seat as soon as the racer is mended.
POCO-NOTES:
Former Lake Mocatek Speedway Co-Announcer Justin Beltrame was scheduled to fill in for Speedway Announcer Steve Pados on Friday evening but his Mom was rushed to the hospital and is in the intensive care unit. The speedway staff and managment has Mrs Beltrame in their hearts and prayers. Former New York racer Russ Sharp on a moments notice took over the announcing duties and did an admirable job in his first ever announcing venture. Sharp was very impressed with the Hamlin facility and the intensity of the great racing that takes place there.
