Mikey Horton Takes Jr. Slingshot Tour Event At Wyalusing Valley... Nunzi Allegrucci Cops Slingshot Tour Main.
Eleven Jr. Slingshots made the trek to Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park Sunday for a National Tour event. Alex Hoffmaster and Horton led the field to the green, and it was Horton jumping to the point in the 30 lap contest. He quickly began to run away from the field, while Hoffmaster held onto second while virtually the remainder of the field ran tight together in a battle for third. Hoffmaster's strong run suffered a devastating end as he was collected by a spinning lapped car. He continued from the rear of the field, but could only muster a 9th place finish. While Horton made it look easy, the battle behind him raged on and at the checkers, it was Brett Hoffmaster, Joe Kata, Matt Riley, and Brittany Tesch who rounded out the top 5.
The Briggs & Stratton Power Products Tour was also on hand for a 30 lap Empire Region event. Nunzi Allegrucci, who can usually be found behind the wheel of a 270 Microsprint, took a hard fought win over Ben Whitaker. Whitaker made several bids at the lead, but was unable to make a clean pass and had to settle for second. Billy Clark, Corey McCarthy, and Byron Worthing rounded out the top 5, who spent most of the event just a few feet apart.
Though all of the drivers did a great job rushing through the show in an attempt to beat the showers from a cold front moving into the area, it just wasn't enough as the 270 Micro feature was halted on lap 5. The remaining 20 laps will be run prior to the qualifying heats when the track returns to action on July 13th. The running order at the time of the red flag was Jordan Tittle, Dave Mooers, Tim Quinter, Bob Maynard, Larry Hoagland, Jerry Traver, and Mark Wurzler. No new cars will be allowed to enter the rained out event on 7/13.
Earlier in the day, kart action saw some very exciting and competitive action. In rookie purple, Kara Chapman took the heat and feature, capturing the point lead as well as point leader Dom "The Dominator" Rogers' machine suffered problems on the pace lap and was unable to take the green. Hayden Baumunk took a close 2nd. Jadyn Ayres also failed to start the feature event.
Novice blue racing has been fierce in 2008, to say the least. While Dayton Cote and Skylar Middendorf have dominated the top 2 spots, a handful of others have been doing their homework and have closed the gap remarkably. Alex Shaffer and John LaBarr, both true rookies to kart racing, have made astounding progress. Cam Ayres, up from the rookie purple division for 2008, has adjusted better with each race. Collin Hadlock, moving over from the SportsKID division, has also become a contender. All 6 competitors ran in a tight pack this week, with Skylar Middendorf grabbing the top spot at the start from polesitter Alex Shaffer. Shaffer looked high and low for a way around Middendorf, but couldn't make a clean pass. Soon, he found himself also trying to fend off pressure from Cote, who made his way past for 2nd on lap 5. Hadlock took 3rd away on the following circuit, only to have Shaffer take the spot back on lap 9. Meanwhile, Cote tried everything short of wrecking the leader to take the top spot. He made the pass for the lead on lap 9, and held on for the win ahead of Middendorf, Shaffer, Hadlock, Ayres, and LaBarr.
Junior Gold saw Jake Maynard take the win in his first start in the division of 2008. Brianna Baumunk took second, ahead of early race leader Jay Adams. It was Maynard's first win in the division, his last win coming in novice blue in 2006.
SportsKIDS found the same three combatants, but with different results as Brianna Baumunk took the checkers ahead of Adams and Maynard. SportsWOMAN found Heather Hadlock in victory lane once again, ahead of Karen Baumunk. The SportsMAN division enjoyed one of it's highest car counts to date. Kevin Baumunk took the win over Matt Roberts, Slingshot regular Rich Howard Jr., Chris Baumunk, and Shane Hickok.
Kayla Wilkins took the lights win, despite coming from the rear twice. Tyler Chapman took 2nd, ahead of Kecia Wilkins, Paul Krambo, and Brian Miller.
The medium feature saw some fantastic racing between brothers Dalton and Dylan Maynard, as well as Chapman and Krambo. Dalton Maynard grabbed the lead from polesitter Tyler Chapman, but it was short lived as Chapman led lap 2. Maynard took the top spot back on lap 3, with Dylan Maynard jockeying for position behind the two leaders. Maynard appeared to be on his way to his first win of the year, but with just 4 laps remaining he slipped just enough in turn 4 to allow Chapman to slip by. The top 3 finished tight together with Chapman taking the win over Dalton Maynard, Dylan Maynard, Carl Abbott, Rodney McConnell, and Paul Krambo.
Jay Abbott and Keith Atkinson took turns holding the lead in heavies, with Abbott holding the top spot at lap 12. Atkinson took the spot away the following lap and held on to win over Abbott, Bob Coveney, and Ziggy Thomashunis.
Derek Chapman was credited with the win in the adult caged division, which has struggled with very low car counts all season.
"The Nightmare of the Northern Tier" will be silent next Sunday in observance of the Independence Day holiday, but will return to action on July 13th for a huge, fun filled day of action presented by Harkness Family Restaurant. It will mark midseason championship day, a complete regular show for karts, slingshots, and 27o micros. The remainder of this weeks 270 feature will also be run. A hot dog eating contest among the point leaders will be held with the winner pocketing $50 courtesy of Harkness Family Restaurant, and a special "Elimination Race" will be held for the top 3 in lights, mediums, and heavies points. The event, sponsored by A.C. Smith NAPA, will see prizes awarded to the top 3 finishers. Every other lap, the last place car will be black flagged and sent off the track. The last car running wins. Instead of a battle to be first, it will be a battle NOT to be LAST!
