EWER, HANLIN SPLIT WYALUSING VALLEY "270 SLAM" WINS!
Sunday saw some gorgeous weather for racing as Z's Repair Service presented "Little League Day" at Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park. While the ball players were treated to a day at the races with their families, it was Mark Ewer and Todd Hanlin that hit "home runs", each scoring a win in one of the 270cc Micros Twin 20's.
Eighteen 270's, the 2nd highest single day car count for the division ever assembled at WVMP, were led to the green in the first 20 lap main. Greg Steward, who picked up his first ever 270 win on WVMP's last race day, grabbed the lead from his outside pole start when polesitter Jared Davis' machine appeared to stumble on the start. Ewer followed to 2nd from his 4th place start and would go to work on Steward. During a lap 4 caution, Stewards machine would lose the air filter. His crew replaced it under the caution, but he found himself restarting at the rear and would only be able to make his way back to 12th. Ewer inherited the lead on the restart, with Davis in tow. Jordan Tittle snuck by for 2nd and kept heavy pressure on Ewer, but was unable to get past. Davis held on for 3rd, with 2007 WVMP Champion Steve Earnest taking 4th in his first WVMP appearance of '08. Todd Hanlin rounded out the top 5.
Hanlin found himself on the pole for the second 20 lap main by virtue of Ewer invert draw of 5. Earnest led lap 1 from the outside pole, but Hanlin wated no time in grabbing the top spot back on lap 2 and leading the rest of the distance. Earnest and Maynard battled hard for the 2nd spot, with Earnest coming away with the spot over Maynard, Tittle, and John Zionkowski.
Remarkably, all of the 270 heats and features saw very few incidents and very little attrition. The 270 racers put on a great show, and really showed why they are considered the headline division at WVMP.
In slingshot action, polesitter John Drake and heat winner Paul Ennes battled for the lead at the drop of the green. Billy Clark, however, had other ideas as he wasted no time making it three wide for the lead on lap 2. Clark came away with it, and on lap 3 point leader Corey McCarthy grabbed 2nd. As teh laps wound down, it appeared McCarthy was beginning to gain ground on the leader. A lap 17 caution put McCarthy right ont he bumper of Clark, but the 23c was too strong as Clark took the checkers over McCarthy, Drake, Ennes, and Bob Clark.
The junior slingshots, who will be running a special 4 race series at WVMP in 2008 dubbed the "Fountain of Youth" series, launched a sneak attack on the speedway, arriving unannounced as they were not on the schedule. Since 3 of the youngsters made the trip, the decision was made to let them run as well. Michael Horton captured the win over Cait Chambers and Molly Chambers.
While kart counts in some divisions appear to be growing, others were quite disappointing with only one adult caged and one junior gold caged competitor entered. The two ran a heat and feature together, but were scored separately. Jay Adams took the junior gold win, and newcomer Loren Stewart was credited with the adult caged win.
Casey Steinhoff made his first rookie purple start of '08 count, leading wire to wire in a very entertaining event that found Jared Zionkowski, Dom Rogers, Hayden Baumunk, and Sean Lane rounding out the top 5.
Dayton Cote, who enjoyed an impressive 7 race win streak in Novice Blue in 2007, appears to be hitting his stride as he took his 2nd win of the season. Skylar Middendorf nabbed 2nd, with rookie racer Alex Shaffer continuing to show improvement as he captured his first top 3 ahead of John Labarr and John Walp.
Jay Adams' domination of the SportskKID division continued, as he took win #4 on the season over Brianna Baumunk, Jake Maynard, and Colin Hadlock. Baumunk was later DQ'd after failing post race inspection with a minor violation.
Karen Baumunk picked up her first SportsWOMAN win, taking the checkers over Heather Hadlock and Isa Lane in a hotly contested event.
Afton, NY's Matt Roberts made his way to victory lane in SportsMAN racing, ahead of Kevin Baumunk and Tyler Chapman. The rumor mill has some new competitors about to appear in the new sport divisions, as the economical option appears to be catching on.
Tyler Chapman's hot streak continues in Lights, taking the win over Kayla Wilkins, Kecia Wilkins, and Carl Abbott. Chapman also did the double, winning in mediums over a great 3 car battle for 2nd that was won by Brian Mroz with brothers Dalton and Dylan Maynard taking 3rd and 4th. "Lightning" Rod McConnell rounded out the top 5.
Ziggy Thomashunis returned to heavy victory lane, with Bob Coveney, Keith Atkinson, Jay Abbott, and Eric Kjelgaard filling out the top 5.
WVMP would like to send out a big thank you to all of the little league players that joined us, and to Z's Repair Service and the Zionkowski Family for helping put the event together. Also, thank you to all of the 270 teams that joined us and put on a tremendous show!
This week, "The Nightmare of the Northern Tier" will see the return of the mighty 600cc Micros, along with a complete regular show. For more information, visit www.wvmpracing.com.
