The Pocono Mountains are well documented as a terrific vacation spot with picturesque scenic landscapes, quick flowing fishing brooks and streams and great places to stay, relax and wind down from the throes of toiling in the everyday work environment. A spectacular addition to the overall Pocono picture is the 1/5 mile clay cushioned oval known as the Hamlin Speedway and once again another fabulous racing card was presented on Saturday evening with 155 eager and talented entries going all out on the finely manicured surface and showing daredevil skills in an all out effort to find their way to the victory circle at the speedway. With the weather being sunny, warm and breezy, the talented roster of Hamlin campaigners diced it out for four and a half hours and eight different winners were crowned in another fabulous evening of racing entertainment. "The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca worked the top line of the speedway like a seasoned veteran to go on and capture the headline Mid Atlantic Slingshot Tour event and in doing so stuffed $500.00 in his pocket at the end of the run. Additional winners included "The Flagtown Flier" Jeff Hartman in the Wingless 600 Sprints, "The Sheriff" Simon Egan in the Stage One Modifieds, "The Big L" Larry Hoagland in the winged 270 Sprints, "The Ambassador" Wes Hearn finding gold in the Super Slingers, "Scoot" Taylor Eccles nabbing a win in the Junior Slingshots, Charlie Shaver in the Rookie 600 Sprints and John Dvorscak in the Rookie 270 Sprints. Another great crowd turned out to see the racing action and from start to finish the racing action was superior in all divisions.
The Mid Atlantic Gold Tour event for the All Star Slingshots was the last event on the schedule but the headline attraction for the great evening of racing entertainment. Keystone Stater Don Schmidt and New Jersey speedster Danny Buccafusca brought the 26-car starting field down for the green flag and it was Buccafusca flexing his muscles early on with a drive to the topside in turn two to grab the lead with Schmidt following. Behind the pair, the side by side racing action was phenomenal as pockets of battles raged on throughout the field and truly tested a driver's skill as they battled back and forth for real estate. Kyle "Hot Rod" Rode set his sights on the lead and worked his magic to the inside of the raceway as he finally was able to slip by Schmidt for the runner-up role. Just as quickly, former Empire Regional Champion "Chargin" Charlie Lawrence was on the move from his eighth place start as was former National Slingshot Champion Cody Kline. The action remained fierce with the drivers refusing to surrender anything at anytime and it was Kline who suffered with a spin in turn three. On the restart, it was "The Mac Attack" Mack Brink covering ground quickly as he slipped by Lawrence and just as quickly Egan, Joe Bodenschatz and "The Brass Section" John Bockhorn became locked up in a battle that allowed the leaders to slip away from them. As the laps wound down, "The Dirt Diva" Shannon Smith became a player in the event as the former National Champion drove a borrowed car from 20th starting place into the top ten. Upfront, Buccafusca continued to work the top lane of the raceway and Rode was able to peek under on many occasions but unable to get the desired run to pull even with him. Brink kept the pressure on Rode and that battle became very significant as Lawrence was back on the attack and followed by as many as five drivers going nip and tuck for racing space. In the end it would be Buccafusca in for the win with Rode in second, Brink in third, Lawrence in fourth and Egan completing the top five. The second five included Bodenschatz, Shannon Smith from 20th, Ben Whitaker, Paul Ennes from 15th, and Bockhorn.
Brian Carber and Eddie Strada made up the front row of the Wingless 600 main event and it was Carber driving hard into the lead at the start with Jacob Severn battling with him. The battle went great up until lap six when Severn pulled up on turn four out of power and the close knit racing saw drivers making evasive moves to avoid him but falling victim to the mad scramble in front of them. Severn, Alex Curley and Jacob Hendershot were eliminated in the incident. When the racing went back to green, it was Jeff Hartman on the attack as he began to figure out the landscape for bite and how he would challenge Carber for the lead. The pressure was intense and finally Carber looped his race car as Hartman went topside for the lead and saw frontrunners Strada and Jay Hartman get turned around as well. On the restart it was Jeff Hartman at his best as he clicked off laps in the 12.3 range to keep his hot rod in the lead. Mick D'Agostino turned up the wick on his chariot as well as he was a tick off in lap times but stayed glued to Hartman until the checkered flag fell on the event. Third place was "Double M" Mark Manieri in his MMF Chassis hot rod and "The Conductor" Bobby Butler was back in top form with a fine fourth place run. "JVD" Jason VanDoren rounded out the top five. Brandon Azzalina, Kyle Rohner, Billy Clark, Shelby Harper and Chad Sandt completed the top ten finishers.
The Rookie Wingless 600 Sprint event found pole sitter Charlie Shavers finally shaking off his early season bad luck as he took control of the lead at the start of the event and led all of the way as he earned his first win in his new division at the speedway. Another former Slingshot star Robbie Hocker put on the heat throughout the event to finish second with Zac Azzalina, William Butler and Steve Yankowski Jr completing the top five. Amber Oraschin, Shawn Rooney, Riley Moczulski, Dave Dornblaser and Aaron Henneforth completed the top ten.
The Rookie 270 Sprint action found Jenna Weidner grabbing the lead and holding on to it for the first five laps until Northampton's John Dvorscak blasted by for the lead. Once in front, Dvorscak was much like a seasoned veteran on the raceway as he clicked off laps in the twelve second range to easily win over last week's winner Josh Schaffer. Weidner enjoyed a great run fro third place while John Walp and Connecticut's Sydney Prince rounded out the top five.
Nazareth resident Tiffany Wambold was another of the new faces at Hamlin who suffered through a malady of problems in her first couple of weeks of the season. Taking advantage of a pole start, Wambold had the guns a blazing as she led the first eight laps of the main event until a restart brought Larry Hoagland into the picture. Hoagland had been riding in second place and on the restart found the action and the traction upstairs to drive off of turn two and into the lead. Once in front Hoagland had clear sailing for a couple of laps but hard driving Tommy Kunsman had some plans of his own. Kunsman slipped by Wambold and set sail for Hoagland. Kunsman ripped off a couple of 11.78 second laps and closed in on Hoagland but the Big L had something extra as well as he clipped off a couple of 11.75 laps to cross the start finish line with the win. Wambold did an excellent job to finish third with Zach Weidner and Gene Burd competing the top five. Robbie Watson, Rick Casario, Kyle Rutledge, Grady Johnston and Hayden Miller completed the top ten.
In Super Slinger action, Tommy Vroom Jr took the lead at the start of the event only to pull up short as he hit turn three with mechanical woes. On the restart it was Tom Arntz blasting into the lead and holding on to it for six laps until Wes Hearn motored by. Once in front, Hearn was in command until the checkered flag fell to secure the win with Arntz in second and Jimmy Johnston in third. Paul Ennes and John Rooks Sr completed the top five. Bob Clark, Kevin Olver, Jerry Hughes, Del Howell and Dale Kober completed the top ten.
The Junior Slingshot event proved to be Taylor Eccles night as he scooted away from the field at the start but was soon challenged by "The Bullville Bandit" Tommy Zwart as the new York Speedster clicked off the fastest times of the evening for the division as he chased Eccles for the lead. Zwart, while making a bid for the lead got into turn three too hot and turned his Chessari Construction mount around. On the restart it was Thomas "Sonny" Strupp applying the pressure to Eccles and last week's winner Jared Labagh putting pressure on Strupp. The laps clicked off and Eccles was able to counter everything thrown at him to claim his first win of the season with Strupp in Second and Labagh in third. The much improved Leo Fotopolous enjoyed a solid fourth place run and newcomer Ryan Quackenbush rounded out the top five. Kevin Predmore, Matthew Henneforth, Cole Hentschel, another newcomer in here first event Kelby Quackenbush and the rallying Tommy Zwart filled out the top ten.
The Stage One Modifieds continue to thrill the Hamlin crowd as "Thrillin" Dylan Martin was seeking his second straight win and grabbed the lead at the drop of the green flag and led until lap seventeen when relentless pressure from Simon Egan and Joel Smith found both veterans slipping by the youngster as they dueled it out for the win. Egan was on the money as he captured his first event in the new division with Joel Smith in the runner-up role. Martin was third with opening night winner Bobby Smith in fourth and John Comandini rounding out the top five.
POCO-NOTES:
The largest fields of Slingshot race cars in the country continue to make their way into the Pocono Mountains to try their hand at mastering the 1/5 mile playground of the Hamlin facility. With 37 stout competitors vying for the 26 starting positions, the competition was over the top and lends credence to the fact it is very tough to defeat the Hamlin regulars on their home turf and just as tough to beat them when they travel out to try other speedways. Good competition makes for better drivers and the talented roster of Hamlin driving stars can be proud of their achievements at home and on the road. Many new faces found their way to the speedway on Saturday and all drivers are welcome to try out the speedway and test their skills against the toughest Slingshot field in the country today.
Heat winners included Simon Egan, Cody Kline, Ryan Raidline and Ben Whitaker in the first round of Slingshots and Jacob Dunn, Don Schmidt, Paul Ennes and John Bockhorn in the second round. Evan VanValkenburg and Alex Yankowksi made their first appearances of the season in the Juniors and Kelby Quackenbush did well in her maiden voyage in the Junior finale. Charlie Towner belted the jersey barriers in turn three on the final lap of the Junior Slingshot feature but was ok from the scary ride although the car suffered casualties in the untimely meeting.
