Dunn Hill 2 Speedway's Small Car Saturday A Success
RC Welding Supply sponsored the first event at Dunn Hill 2 Speedway on
Saturday. With another track close due to an illness the pits were filled to
capacity. The 270 Road Show was on hand for their special event. 600
Micros, Rookie 270 micros, Slingshots and 13 different divisions of go karts
made up the days program. The drivers and teams were all excited about
getting on to the track.
The management decided to run the micros and slingshots first. The
mighty 600 Micros made their way for the first feature. The front row was
made up of 2011 WVMP 600 champ Jordan Tittle and Chad VanHorn.
When the green flag fell it was VanHorn who grabbed the lead with Tittle in
hot pursuit. The action was fast and tight with Chad leading the entire 20
event. Rounding out the top five were Jordan Tittle, Kevin Hayle, Kendale
Crout, Jake Hummel.
At the end of 2011, it was decided to start a division for newcomers to the
270 micros. The Rookie 270 division was formed. It would give the
beginners a chance to learn the cars. Wyalusing's Jared Zionkowski moved
up to this division following in his dad's footsteps. He picked up his first
checkered flag on Saturday winning the qualifying event. He redrew the pole
position for the feature. He lead the first three laps of the event, when he
was passed by Quinn Roberts. Roberts went on to win the feature event,
with Jared finishing in second, Rusty Crone was third, Alec Quiggle was
fourth and in fifth was Jeffery Weaver.
The All Star Slingshots made their way to the track. Eleven drivers and
team were all hoping to be the first to record the feature win. Kamdin Maby,
Skylar Middendorf and Alex Shaffer moved into the All Stars from the junior
slingshots. Great to have Skylar back after he took the 2011 season off
from competition. It sure didn't appear that he hadn't raced in a year. The
youngster started fifth in his qualifier and recorded a second place finish.
Skylar started on the pole with veteran Carl Bittenbender in second position.
Carl grabbed the lead with Skylar working hard to stay with Carl challenging
for the lead early in the event. The rest of the competitors shuffled position
throughout the field. When the checkers fell it was Carl Bittenbender picking
up the win. Rounding out the top five were Rich Howard Jr., Skylar
Middendorf, Dalton Maynard and Alex Shaffer.
The final big car event of the days program was the 270 Road Show. This
event is made for the teams to be able to run different tracks in a series
format. Thirty two teams came to Dunn Hill 2 for the first time all hoping to
take home the checkered flag. With all the teams on hand they had to run a
consi as well. Bringing the field to the green were Denny Rinhimer and Josh
Stoyer. Rinhimer grabbed the lead with Stoyer following in his tire tracks.
They battled hard for the top stop as several cautions slowed the field and
kept them tight. In the closing laps Sean McAndrew passed the Stoyer
machine trying to challenge for the win. Rinhimer would not hear of it and
held off Sean to capture the first 270 Road Show event at Dunn Hill 2
Speedway. Finishing in the top five were Sean McAndrew, Ken Duke, Josh
Stoyer and Darrel Troxell.
The go kart portion of the days events were next. Scheduled were 13
different classes, only one class did not compete as there were no Stock
Appearing Clones. Up first was the newly started class the Super Seniors.
The win went to Rodney McConnell who started in the front row. He held off
Dale Anderson, David Perry Sr. and Bren Lattimer for the win.
It was the youngster turn, with the Rookie Purple class making their way on
the track. This division is just what the name says, Rookie. Most of these
youngster have never been a go kart or any kind of race machine. It always
takes some time for the new drivers to get the hang of the event.
Qualifying race winner Brandon Spezraletti and Nicholas Whitesel brought
the drivers to the green flag. Both drivers battled for the top spot as a couple
of cautions kept the tight together. On the final lap they touched giving the
lead to Connor Davis. Brandon was able to hang to second place, while
Doug Newbigging moved into third. Nicholas rallied back to capture fourth
and Micheal Davis finished fifth coming from last starting position.
Sportskid were up next, as this division is a stock motor class. This allows
all the kids to race competitively together. Mackenzie Doyle and Keith
Lamphere made up the front row. Keith grabbed the lead from Mackenzie.
Keith held on to capture the win over DJ Knowles, David Perry Jr., Dom
Rogers and Mackenzie who took a wild ride during the event. Thankfully she
was not injured.
The Animal class found only three cars in competition, but it was an
exciting race. Randy Boston brought home the checkers followed closely by
Zach Bruce and Bob Coveney. Zach tried to dethrone the Boston machine,
but could not make the pass.
Novice Blue is one of the most exciting children's division on the track.
Many new faces this season including Makayla Davis, Mitch Maynard, Lacin
Terry, Dustin Roberts and Shaylee Stowell. Jacob Doyle and Dustin Roberts
brought the field to the green. Doyle grabbed the lead from Roberts early.
Making his move was Cody Kershner with the hopes of taking the top spot
away. Those hopes were almost dashed when Shaylee Stowell had a
mechanical problem and Cody was involved in the caution. When the
checkers fell it was Jacob Doyle picking up his first win at Dunn Hill 2 with
Cody in second. Third went to Dustin Roberts, fourth was Seth Anderson
and rounding out the top five was Craig Smith.
The Sportsmen class is a division where the motor is a stock sealed
engine. Troy Maby and Doug Lantz brought the field to the green. Doug
grabbed the lead and held off Micheal Tuttle to capture the win, with Troy
Maby finishing in third.
The final class of the days racing were the popular Flat Heads. Bob
Coveney and Tripp Ritter paced the field. Ritter grabbed the lead and never
looked back. He held off the veteran Coveney for the entire 20 lap race.
Finishing in third was Carl Abbott, fourth was Jay Abbott and in fifth was
Quinn Davis.
With the first event in the books, the fans got to see some exciting racing in
all divisions. Racing started in the daylight and ended in the night time, but it
was a great day of racing. Next Saturday May 12Th, will be a regular show
