Saturday, April 7th saw the first of five shootout races at Shellhammers Speedway. 16 All-Star Slingers and 8 Juniors were on hand with 140 karts. The features were set by time trials. Travis Bieber set the fastest time for the All Stars, 10.445, and Dylan Hoch was the quickest of the Juniors, 10.619.
The 25 lap main even saw Travis Bieber and Matt Massone on the front row. When the green fell Travis and his potent 114 took off and never looked back. Brett Bieber moved to 2nd early, but had nothing to show his brother. Massone ran well until problems sidelined him on lap 12. The best battle on the track was between JR Fulper, Jason Harmon, Rob Sentner and Danny Buccafusca. They fought the entire 25 laps for the 3rd through 6th positions.
The 25 lap Junior Slingshot feature was much the same as the other race. Dylan Hoch took the green and ran all the way to the checkers. There were five newcomers to Shellies in the field and they all did a fine job of getting around the 1/8 mile. Jarrett Davenport ran his beautiful 1x to a 2nd place finish with 43A of Amber Britto just .9 of a second behind for third.
The day also saw the debut of a new class to the speedway. We are now running a "Master Slingshot" class for drivers 35 years of age and older. Jason Harman set fast time at 10.500 seconds and led wire to wire in their feature.
All-Star racer Ed Shaub found out how important it is to make sure the steering wheel is locked in place. It came off in his hands just as he climbed the wall and did a "one over" in front of the starter Dave Cordier Jr. New driver Kassidy Kreitz found out how hard the wall is in front of the grandstand. The car hit hard enough that it was carried off the track. Hopefully both of these drivers got it out of their systems for Saturday's regular season opener.
