Hamlin, PA - Hamlin Speedway Closes Out 2011 Racing Season In A Blaze Of Glory
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
The premier racing attraction in the Poconos, the Hamlin Speedway, closed out it's very successful 2011 racing season last evening in another fabulous blaze of glory as 146 competition filled racers and another standing room only crowd came out to put the exclamation point on just an incredible 2011 season for the Smith Family at their Pocono Mountains clay covered playground. Even though the Smith Family waged a season long war with the forces of Mother Nature, the racing action at the 1/5 mile oval brought to the forefront many more racing stars that will portray a bright future ahead for the successful promotion team. With new cars and drivers in abundance along with the always great group of regular weekly performers, the racing action was heated and exciting from the first green flag to the final checkered flag thrown by starter Russ Furry when the final curtain rang down on the speedway at 11:10 in the evening. Always pushing the envelope, the Smith Family added the Pit Stop Challenge to the Alll Star Slingshot finale and it was the action of the Charlie Lawrence Team that had him driving to the cone first and therefore starting the final half of the 50 lap Slingshot final in the front and a position he held until the curtain fell on the season of racing activity. "The Weasel" Jacob Dunn continued his 2011 season of great racing with a solid win in the National Junior Slingshot 25 lap event Tour event as he wired the field on his way to the winner's circle. Jay Hartman in the Wingless 600's, Roger Collins in the Super Slingers, Ryan Smith in the 270's, Hayden Miller in the Rookie 270's and Danielle dickinson in the Rookie Wingless 600's, all put their own exclamation point on a season that more than balanced out with the great racing that takes place at Hamlin.
After a dual heat series format of heats were clicked off to determine the starting grid for the outstanding field of 38 entries, with the lowest point totals starting in the front and so forth, "The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca and the returning Jersey Duke JR Fulper would bring the 26 car starting field down for the start of the 50-lap grind. Buccafusca utilized the top of the raceway and a tremendous drive off of turn two to assume command of the event with Fulper dogging him each step of the way. The best and most diversified field of Slingshots in the nation began to duke it out for real estate and the going was tough and the purchase of the land was a dogfight as some spins and the banging of bumpers became a lap by lap occurence with the big money on the line for the racers. Buccafusca never waivered through the first half of the race even though Kyle "Hot Rod" Rode worked his way to second from eighth starting spot to challenge for the lead with Garden Staters Fulper and Matt Carman and Empire State hot shoe Lawrence applying plenty of pressure to the backside of the Buccafusca race car.
At the break Promoter Randy Smith lined up the top twelve cars for the Pit Stop Challenge portion of the evening. As the crowd joined in for the send off for the tire changers, the crews sprung into action and very quickly the Charlie Lawrence racer drove away to the cone to restart the race from the pole position. All cars passed the lug nut test and when the racing resumed it was "Chargin" Charlie at the point with Kyle Rode, Simon Egan and Danny Buccafusca following. The final 25-lap skirmish saw Lawrence from the top of the raceway fending off the advances of the hard driving Rode with Egan falling to the onslaught of Buccafusca. Lawrence scored the win and the big $1,000.00 winner's prize that went along with the win. Rode continued his hot surge at Hamlin with a runner-up finish with Buccafusca, Egan and Empire State wheelman Robby Hocker completing the top five. Invader Brett Bieber, Cody Kline, Jimmy Johnston, Matt Carman and Aaron Henneforth completed the top ten for the 38 All Star Slingshots on hand for the event. Again some of the tour regulars opted not to attend the finak Hamlin event as the quality of the weekly field at Hamlin is the finest in the country today and all of the racers who qualified into the starting field can be quite proud of their achievement.
The National Junior Slingshot event proved to be the Jacob Dunn Show. "The Weasel" seized the lead at the drop of the drop of the green flag with "Thrillin" Dylan Martin remaining close for the first half of the event. The leader in the National Junior Slingshot points, "The Tornado" Tyler Johnston slipped by Martin with a great run off of the top of the race track in turn two and set sail for Dunn. Dunn turned up the wick and clicked off three laps where he broke the track record as he lowered the standard to 14.324 seconds per lap. Dunn, who has ahd a fast hot rod all season proved to be the ticket on this night of racing as he captured the checkered flag with Johnston in the runner-up role and Martin a close third. Chris Kurtz continued his quest for a title with a solid fourth place finish and the "Jonestown Jet" Kyle Gruber completed the top five. Jared Labagh, Taylor Eccles, Kevin Predmore, the birthday boy Bobby Flood and Zack Weisenfluh completed the top ten finishers for the 22 junior racers on hand.
Rookie 600 Wingless action found Stony Point, New York resident Stephen Reynolds finding the fast lane and leading through the first half of the race. As the car began to go away on Reynolds, fellow New Yorker Danielle dickinson found her car becoming quicker. dickinson grabbed the lead on lap eleven and led the remaining laps to claim the victory with Larry Hoagland taking his first ride in a 600 and coming away with the runner-up finish. Justin Brewster was third with Jacob Hendershot in fourth and Reynolds completing the top five. Larry Mekic, Riley Moczulski, Chris Rupp, Tim Howell and Heidi Hedin completed the top ten.
In Rookie 270 action, Bernville, Pennsylvania hot shoe Hayden Miller seized control of the event on the opening lap and proceeded to walk away with the win despite constant pressure from Connecticut wheelman Grady Johnston. Missi Seip, Makenzie Harper, Alyssa Riker and Robert Taylor followed the leaders across the line.
Jay Hartman took control of the Wingless 600 event at the opening bell and had a fast buggy as he quickly distanced himself from the rest of the field. Shelby Harper kept pace as the runner-up and Kyle Lick moved from sixth to third with some exciting rim riding racing. Hartman proved to be the class of the field with a big victory with Harper in second, Lick in third, Joe Kata doing great work in fourth and Jonathan Hull racing to fifth place. Mick D'Agostino, Eddie Strada, Ryan Smith, Rick Calvert and Danny Wykes completed the top ten finishers.
Defending track champion Gene "The Machine" Burd jumped out to an early lead in the 270 headliner in the Widdos racing entry but seven laps into the event exploded a motor amidst a hail of smoke and fire. "Flyin" Ryan Smith inherited the lead and from then on proceeded to show the remainder of the field how to attack the raceway as he cruised to victory despite a late run by Tommy Kunsman Jr. Matt Mountz finished third in the Rob Warko entry with teammates Kurt Bettler and Larry Hoagland completing the top five. First time racer Tiffany Wambold finished sixth with Hayden Miller, Rick Casario, Luke Kroboth and Trevor Dunn completing the top ten finishers.
The Super Slinger feature had Aaron Henneforth jumping out front and leading the first eleven laps of the main event until problems caused him to stop on the raceway. "The Harmony Hurricane" Roger Collins took over the point and proceeded to drive to a hard fought victory over the always challenging Dale Kober. Joe Bodenschatz was third with Wes Hearn and Jimmy Johnston completing the top five. Henry Anderson, Bob Clark, Tom Arntz, Herb Finger and Briand Jones completed the top ten.
