Hamlin, PA - Hamlin Speedway Gets Back On Track With Spectacular Labor Day Show
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
The forces of Mother Nature have proved to be greatest adversary of the 2011 racing season for the Hamlin Speedway. Undaunted the Smith Family and the great staff at the speedway, along with 122 star studded racers and a great crowd on hand got the final portion of the Hamlin racing season revved up once again and the spectacular seven division racing card on Saturday evening went off without a hitch. Featuring Junior Slingshot and Super Slinger extra distance and payout events, the show was run off close to perfection and was completed at 10:14 in the evening. The speedway was ravaged by Hurricane Irene a week ago but Randy Smith and staff whipped the 1/2 mile playground back in shape for the Saturday show and the speedway remained tacky yet challenging all night long as the talented roster of driving stars showed their style and guile with side by side and three wide racing action that kept the crowd on their feet all night long and once again justifying the fact the Hamlin Speedway is where the stars come out to shine and the results are spectacular. Chris Kurtz in the Juniors, John Bockhorn in the All Stars, Charlie Bodine in the Super Slingers, Jeff Hartman in the Wingless 600's, Trevor Dunn in the 270's, Scott Avery in the Rookie 270's and Simon Egan in the Rookie 600's were the brightest stars of the evening as each recorded wins in their respective divisions.
Time trials kicked off the racing activity for the Juniors and the Super Slingers to set the starting lineups for their feature events while heats events and a B-Main established the line-ups for the remainder of the racing divisions at the speedway. "The Weasel" Jacob Dunn was quick time in the Juniors as he stopped the clocks at 15.219 seconds with Thomas "Sonny" Strupp a couple of ticks off at 15.380 seconds per lap. Billy Weaver was on the money in the Super Slinger time trials as he rode a 14.732 second lap with Dale Kober nailing his best lap at 14.801 seconds.
The "Brass Section" John Bockhorn and "The Closer" Mike Fogler brought the 24 car Slingshot field down for the start of the headline 25-lap feature event. Bockhorn, a one time feature event winner during the season, won the drag race down the front stretch and led the field into turn one with Fogler in hot pursuit. Bockhorn put his Creative Auto Interiors/Pickle Man hot rod at the top of the cushion and held off the early challenges of Fogler, Troy Langendoerfer, "The Electric Man" Colin White and John Pantis as he established command of the point. The eleventh lap saw the first casualty of the event as Langendoerfer slowed in turns one and two ending his great ride. The restart was a carbon copy of the initial start as Bockhorn was comfortable riding the cushion and Fogler moving his race car around the multi-grooves of the speedway trying the find the proper way to stay on the attack.
The racing was spectacular front to back as many mini-battles found the quality roster of drivers jockeying for position throughout the field. From 13th starting spot came the "Hot Rod" as Kyle Rode was seeking his third win in last four starts at the speedway. Rode used a variety of moves to inch his way forward and found the top five by lap-fifteen when he powered by current National Slingshot Champion "The Dirt Diva" Shannon Smith. The racing action remained at a fever pitch and was slowed momentarily when "Double J" Jimmy Johnston had a right rear sneaker lose oxygen on lap-18. When the race restarted it was Bockhorn at the point and Fogler still applying the pressure. A series of restarts from lap-20 to 23 saw the event get checkered with Bockhorn scoring his second win of the season and Mike Fogler in the runner-up role in what has to be his best finish of the season. Colin White was third in a great run with John Pantis in fourth and Kyle Rode continuing his great work at the speedway by rounding out the top five. Shannon Smith, Billy Clark, Cody Kline, Danny Buccafusca and Robby Hocker completed the top ten.
Newcomer Steve Walters found the Hamlin Speedway to his liking as he led the first eleven laps of the 270 Micro feature event. Walters slowed at that point and went pit side as Trevor Dunn inherited the lead on the restart. Connecticut hot shoe CJ Heing kept the pressure on and as the race went into the latter stages third place man Larry Hoagland spun and collected fourth place running Robbie Watson to slow the pace and created a two lap shootout for all of the marbles. Dunn was up to the task as he held off Heinig for the win in his Rainbow Roofing racer with Heinig in the runner-up role. Mike Casario drove from tenth starting place to finish third with the returning Gary Berkenstock in fourth and Rich O'Neill completing the top five.
"The Flagtown Flyer" Jeff Hartman seized the lead at the drop of the green flag and dominated the wingless 600 feature attraction despite a late charge by Billy Clark. Hartman was at the top of his game as he moved his Hyper race car from top to bottom around the speedway as he clicked off consistent 12.261 second laps on his way to victory. Clark put on a great drive to finish in the runner-up role with Massachusetts wheelman Mick D'Agostino racing to third place. Joseph Smith hung tough in fourth spot and "The Minuteman" Alex Curley completed the top five. Joe Kata, Brett Michalski, Brian Gilmore, Tony Iudicello and Rick Calvert completed the top ten.
"Thrillin" Dylan Martin and the "Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh brought down the stars of tomorrow starting field for their 25-lap event. Martin won the drag race at the start and carved out a lead as Weisenfluh and Tyler Johnston battled it out for the runner-up role. That battle came to a halt when contact sent both drivers to the back of the field. On the restart it was Martin at the point with Jacob Dunn, Thomas Strupp, Tommy Zwart and Chris Kurtz now applying the pressure. Another skirmish saw Strupp and Zwart restarting from the rear and now it was Chris Kurtz and Jacob Dunn coming after Martin. As lap-20 appeared Kurtz moved to the very bottom of the raceway to pull even with Martin and the pair duked it out side by side for two laps before Kurtz prevailed as the new leader. Once in front Kurtz pulled away and drove to victory and grabbing the $200.00 winner's prize for an excellent drive. Dylan Martin was the runner-up in another great run and "The Tornado" Tyler Johnston raced from the rear of the field to earn a hard fought third place finish. Jacob Dunn was fourth in another stout run and Tommy Zwart rallied from the rear of the bus to complete the top five. First timer BJ Antonio headed up the second five with Allison Kaminski, Thomas Strupp, Kyle Gruber and another newcomer Dakota Bartlet rounding out the top ten. Another newcomer Dylan Hoch was eleventh in the final rundown and he did it the hard way as he nursed the car home with a badly belt rear axle.
"The Sheriff" Simon Egan took no prisoners as he seized control of the Rookie 600 event and led all laps as he hit consistent 12.444 second laps on his way to a convincing victory in the 20-lap feature run. Eddie Strada was in for the runner-up role and Larry Mekic was third. Steve Van Valkenburg raced to a fourth place finish and "Rimac" Riley Moczulski completed the top five.
Scott Avery grabbed the lead at the drop of Russ Furry's green flag and drove on to victory in the Rookie 270 Micro feature event. Dereck Frederick was a close runner-up as he closed quickly in the final five laps of the event. Hayden Miller was third, Mackenzie Harper was in for fourth and Connecticut's Grady Johnston completed the top five.
The Super Slingers saw local star Charlie Bodine return to racing action for the 35-lap headliner for the over-35 driving stars and led all of the way to carve out a victory at the Hamlin oval. Dale Kober closed quickly late in the event but fell a tad short in his bid and finished in the runner-up role. Henry Anderson drove his Mike Griffin's State Farm Insurance sponsored hot rod to a third place finish and Aaron Henneforth enjoyed a late charge that brought him to fourth place and Joe Bodenschatz raced from 12th starting place to round out the top five. Jerry Hughes, Tom Arntz, Jimmy Johnston, Wes Hearn and Bob Clark completed the top ten finishers.
