Dornblaser, Oraschin, Smith, and Eagan West End Fair Ntionals Champions.
The inscription on the plaque says it all. “ 2011 3rd. Annual West End Fair Nations Champion.” Dave Dornblaser, Chris Oraschin, Ryan Smith, and Simon Eagan took possession of those coveted pieces of hardware as they were added to the list of drivers that can call themselves West End Fair Nationals winners.
After the northeast was devastated with Hurricane Irene a picture pefect day greated race goes at the 90th annual West End Fair for the 3rd Annual West End Fair Nationals presented by Borgers Speedway. With car counts down slightly due to the weekend storm 92 cars took to the clay at the West End Fairgrounds and provided with an exciting night of racing. The entire show ran very smooth and the last checkered flag dropped at 10:00 p.m.
The 270 Sprints once again had the makings of the Classic Borgers Speedway Dave Dornblaser-Pat Bealer duel. Dave Dornblaer led the field to the evening’s first green flag followed by Pat Bealer and Ross Perchak. Bealer took the lead on lap three and the chase was on. With Dornblaser and Perchak on Bealer’s tail the trio would prove to be the dominant force until the half way mark when Bealer came to a stop in turn three with a flat tire. Rob Pajuis who had been running strong all night moved into third. As the race wound down Dornblaser running a flawless race was not to be caught. Dornblaser took starter Bobby Stull’s checkered flag followed by Perchak, Pajuis, Bobby Butler in the Brian Goduslky 90, and last year’s West End defending champion Steve Walters.
“Go Or Go Home” time trial format was used for the Wingless 600 Sprints with Chris Oraschin setting top time followed by Shelby Harper, and Brandon Azzalina.
As the field roared into turn one Oraschin led the way followed by Shelby Harper and Brandon Azzalina. It would take four restarts to get one lap of green in the books but after that the action was heart pounding. Lap three Azzalina blasted into second place and a battle was shaping up between Oraschin and Azzalina. As the leaders set a blistering pace Bobby
Butler had other ideas and moved into third place setting up a three car shootout for the West End Fair Nationals glory. The red flag flew on lap ten as Bruce Leote flipped violently down the front straightaway. Leote climbed from his crumpled racer unhurt. On the restart Butler got past Azzalina on lap eleven and the three car shootout continued. With Butler putting the pressure on Oraschin and Azzalina putting the pressure on Butler a real “Pressure Cooker” was building. As the checkered flag waved it was Oraschin, butler, Azzalina, Brett Michalski, and Louie Horvath.
The Modifieds proved to be a real “Nail Biter” with the winner decided the last lap coming out of turn two.. Brad Arnold jumped to the early lead followed by Ryan Smith and Bill Fisher. It did not take long for Arnold and Smith to open a lead and begin a two car fight for the win. Lap after lap it was Arnold and Smith with neither driver giving an inch. Arnold led every lap until the lap that counted the most. Given the white flag Smith clipped a tire in turn two getting into the front of Arnold. Smith recovered and went on for the win followed by Pat VanVarik, Arnold, Jim Johnston, and Bill Fisher.
40 AllStarr Slingshots 40 cars were entered but only 24 cars made the A-Main. Starting on the pole Simon Eagan led the way to turn one followed by Kyle Rohner and Matt Carman. Carman made the move on Rohner for second on lap two until tangeling with Rohner a few laps later and restarting in the rear. While Eagan was dominant three packs of four cars made up some good racing throughout the field. By lap thirteen Matt Mertz moved to third but it was to be short lived as Kyle Hieber and Joe Bodenshatz got by. Eagan took the win followed by Rohner, Kyle Bieber, Bodenshatz, and Merts.
A very efficiently run show was completed by 10:00 p.m. and many of the large crowd of race fans visited their favorite drivers in the pit area.
The management team of Richie Smith, Rich Raidline, and Steve heckman would like to thank the sponsors, drivers, owners, pit crews, and race fans that made the 3rd Annual West Fair Nationals presented by Borgers Speedway way a tremendous success.
