Tried to change gears for the first time today on my slinger. Do the 4 motor bount bolts need to be loosened. I got 3 loose and one is causing frustration. Disconnected the rear panhard bar for easier access. Do I break the chain while its on the motor? How can I slide it off the motor. Total first timer here and I'm stuck. Any advice or specific instructions would help. Help here or hit me at slesh_5@comcast.net The one that gets me thru this goes to the front of the christmas card list for sure. Steve

To change gears on a slingshot:
Loosen muffler clamp, remove muffler if necessary Loosen 4 mounting bolts on swingarm Slide engine forward providing much slack in chain. Roll chain off of sprocket gently Unbolt 6 7/16" nuts on sprocket May have to loosen the hub with a 1/4" or 5/16" allen socket if gear is clamped tight. Remove sprocket halves.
Installation is reverse of this. Motor will be slightly more forward if going to a larger gear... further back if a smaller gear. Pull motor back snug and tighten 4 swingarm/engine bolts in an X pattern. Check chain tension. Should be between 1/4"-1/2" of deflection. Loosen motor and adjust the bolts accordingly to get correct tension.
Helpful hints: It helps to weld 4 nuts to the motor plate so that only one wrench is needed to install/remove. I have seen alot of guys that weld bolts to the plate sticking down through but i don't like this as they drag on the track and the threads will get crossed up or bent.
Bolts should be 3/8" thickness (9/16" wrench) in the motor plate/swingarm. Always use a large fender washer and motor plate wedge on each bolt to keep the motor from tilting around side to side and creating chain misalignment. Contact Richie Smith (Smith Fabrications) for these brilliant wedges that work great for this.

thx...I saw the wedges I'm sure they would help. Can't get one of the motor plate bolts loose. Sprayed hard with a loosener spray and plan to let it sit overnite. Never even thought of the muffler. We'll give it another shot on Sunday. THX Steve
