HAMLIN SPEEDWAY NEWS
Hamlin, PA - Familiar Faces Share The Winner's Wreath In Successful Racing Card At Hamlin Speedway
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Hamlin Speedway Promoter Randy Smith had just about completed his preparation work on Friday afternoon for the busy Saturday of racing ahead at the premier speedway in the Pocono Mountains when a quick hitting thunderstorm unleashed a torrent of water on his freshly manicured speedway. In a heartbeat a ton of hard work went down the drain but undaunted Smith fought back by traveling to his speedway at first light on Saturday morning and began the process of re-doing the same prep work for the speedway that was washed away a day before. That being said, when the 115 competing race teams rolled into the speedway on Saturday afternoon, the speedway was ready for the tremendous racing action that was about to follow. The Mid Atlantic Slingshot feature headliner was captured by Kyle "Hot Rod" Rode as he claimed the top spot after one of competition and then held off the field in a close blanket finish over a herd of hot rod cowboys who chased him across the finish line. The win for Rode was his second in the last three weeks of racing at the speedway. Nunzi Allegrucci captured the 270 Micro event for the winged warriors while "The Wild Child" Brian Gilmore captured his second wingless 600 Micro main of the new season. Charlie Shaver showed the hot hand in the Super Slinger encounter and "Thrillin" Dylan Martin added another win to his impressive 2011 racing resume with a win in the Junior Slingshot event. "The Jet" Justin Brewster found the speed and guile to reign supreme in the Rookie wingless 600 headliner and newcomer Dereck Frederick was a quick study in figuring out the tricky quick Hamlin racing surface and went on to wire the field in his first appearance at the speedway. The entire hotly contested evening of racing entertainment was completed at 9:47 PM that was presented by S&S Speedways.
Henry Anderson grabbed the lead at the start of the 26-car starting field feature event but gave way to Rode after the first lap. Rode had a great set-up in his Frank Smith Surveyors/St Jude's Children Hospital sponsored buggy and drove out to a three car advantage over Anderson, Charlie Shaver, "The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca and the "Brass Section" John Bockhorn. As hard as Rode tried to distance himself from the field, the racing action remained close throughout the pack. Shaver made a nice move underneath Anderson to claim the runner-up spot and Buccafusca followed suit a couple of laps later placing Anderson to fourth place but still very much in the hunt. A couple of skirmishes slowed the action but each time the event re-started it was Rode up to the task at hand to remain at the head of the class.
A 28th-lap caution for a disabled Shannon Smith found the field bunching up for a two lap shootout. Rode was cat-quick as he held off a last ditch effort from Shaver with Buccafusca moving to the inside lane to try to slip by Shaver. Rode went on to score a narrow win over Shaver, Buccafusca, Anderson and a late charging Dale Kober as the top five finished under a blanket. Mack Brink, Billy Weaver from 24th, Aaron Henneforth, Cody Kline from 22nd and John Pantis completed the top ten that saw 21 of the 26 starters finish the hard fought contest.
The Super Slingers main event saw Charlie Shaver blasting out of the starting gate at the drop of the green flag and leading all of the way to capture another feature event at the speedway. Henry Anderson kept pace as the runner-up and Aaron Henneforth claimed a podium finish in third place. Tom Arntz and Dale Kober duked it out the entire race for fourth position and it was Arntz finally claiming fourth place in the final lap of the vent with Kober finishing up in fifth. Roger Collins got a late start but rallied to claim a nice sixth place finish..
Nunzi Allegrucci, the 2008 and 2009 champion at the speedway for the 270 Micros, was back in top form as he grabbed the lead at the start of the event and fended off all challengers to return to victory lane at the speedway. CJ Heinig finished second with Tommy Kunsman making a great drive from 10th starting place to finish third with Robbie Watson and Larry Hoagland completing the top five finishers.
The fourteen car starting car field for the Junior Slingshots showed the amazing talent the stars of tomorrow exhibit when they are on the racetrack. "The Predator" Kevin Predmore was quick to the point from his outside starting spot and led the first six tours around the speedway. Dylan Martin executed a nifty pass on the inside of Predmore to seize the point and control of the event. As the laps clicked off the competition became closer and closer as Predmore remained close while "The Weasel" Jacob Dunn, Chris Kurtz and Allison Kaminski all followed closely behind. Martin was not to be denied as sped under Russ Furry's checkered flag for the win with Predmore in the runner-up role and Dunn claiming third place. Kurtz and Kaminski completed the top five and the second five consisted of newcomer Jared Labagh, Bobby Flood, Kyle Gruber, Tyler Peet and Thomas Strupp.
Justin Brewster took the lead at the start of the Rookie 600 Wingless Micro event with fellow New Yorker Stephen Reynolds in tow. Brewster was turning consistent laps in the 12.4 second range to remain at the point and led all of the laps to claim another win at the speedway. Stephen Reynolds finished a close second in a great run for the youngster who found himself upside down just a week ago at the speedway. "J-Shot" Jacob Hendershot rim rode his way from a 13th place start to finish third and Austin Burke was fourth with Simon Egan completing the top five. Tim Howell, Danielle dickinson, Chris Rupp, Eddie Strada and Jamie Czekai completed the top ten finishers.
The Rookie 270 Micro feature saw newcomer Dereck Frederick prepared to go racing as he seized the lead at the start of the event and led all laps to capture his first ever win at the speedway. Scott Avery claimed the runner-up spot with Hayden Miller in third, Makenzie Harper in fourth and Paul Rimsky completing the top five.
Brian Gilmore took off at the start of the 600 Wingless feature headliner with "The Bushkill Bullet" Kyle Rohner in tow. While Gilmore was out front, a battle raged behind him as Rohner was fending off the charging posse of Jay Hartman, Joe Kata, Jeff Hartman and the "Incredible" Jonathan Hull. The racing action became closer and closer as the laps clicked off and and the top eight cars were running under a blanket as the talented drivers tried to find the fastest piece of sweet real estate that would seal the deal to the front. Gilmore was up to the task as he picked up his second win of the season with Rohner doing great work as the runner-up. Hull made some daring but calculated moves to land in third place with Joe Kata in fourth and Alex Curly rounding out the top five. Jeff Hartman, Brett Michalski, Billy Clark, Mark Manieri and Dan Beacon completed the top ten finishers.
POCO-NOTES:
The hotly contested evening of racing entertainment began on time and the staff kept moving the program along swiftly with a couple of breaks taken to add moisture back into the track surface and keep the race track racy throughout the evening. The large crowd on hand for the events saw a couple of cars get upside down during the evening as rookies Heidi Hedin and Steve Van Valkenburg made hard contact with the Jersey barriers and snap rolled their race cars in separate incidents with much damage being incurred to both race cars. Neither driver was unhurt from the scary incidents.
Heat race wins were claimed by Allison Kaminski and Kevin Predmore in the Junior Slingshots. Kyle Rode, John Pantis and Charlie Shaver captured the first round of heats for the Slingshots while Jeff Cosgrove, Aaron Henneforth and Brandon Clauss were victorious in the second round of heats that determined the starting field for the headliner. Greg Stevens and Justin Brewster prevailed in the 600 Rookie Wingless heat events and Nunzi Allegrucci and Larry Hoagland won the 270 Micros heats. Super Slinger heats went to Charlie Shaver and the returning Tommy Vroom. Billy Clark and Jeff Hartman captured the heats events for the Wingless 600 Micros. The Rookie 270 Micro heat was won by Dereck Frederick.
Promoter Denise Smith was missing from the Saturday night event as she traveled to attend a funeral in Ohio. General Manager Megan Ammirato, who was released from the hospital on Friday afternoon, did a yeoman's job to get through the evening with the help of Kaiti Sassano and Alleson Rode.
