Hamlin, PA - Rode, Hartman, Kunsman, Kober, Johnston, Burke And Kurtz Share The Spotlight In Hamlin Speedway Feature Wins On S&S Speedway Night
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
A dedicated field of energetic racers and a great group of loyal racing fans converged together in the Pocono Mountains on Saturday evening with all of the elements of surprise and disguise as the warm and breezy weather of the summer season added to last evening's racing events at the Hamlin Speedway as the Smith Family presented the ninth racing card of the season at their 1/5 mile lightning quick speedway. A new track surface greeted the quality field of racing talent as extra time was granted to the 125 entries to dial in their cars for the exciting evening that laid ahead for them. The seven feature event card was completed at 9:44 in the evening as the racers were on their best behavior as the events clicked off in record time. When the final event had been checkered, new faces emerged in the Hamlin Speedway Winners Circle with "The Hot Rod" Kyle Rode capturing his first main event in the All Star Slingshot showdown, Tommy Kunsman returning to victory lane in the 270 main, Jeff Hartman capturing his second win of the week in the 600 Micros, Dale Kober returning to the winner's circle, Grady Johnston scoring his first win in the Rookie 270's, Austin Burke scoring his second consecutive win in the Rookie 600's and "The Midget" Chris Kurtz nailing his second win of the week in the Junior Slingshot encounter.
The evening began with the Junior Slingshot twenty lap attraction and it was Kurtz showing the hot hand from the opening bell as he drove off from fellow pole sitter Kyle Gruber to quickly establishment himself as a showstopper as he raced away from the quality field of youngsters. Gruber gave way to hard driving Thomas Strupp in the runner-up role and the third generation driving Strupp made for an interesting show as his Strupp racing hot rod was a tad faster in lap times but couldn't find the drive off of the turns to challenge Kurtz for the point. Kurtz drove his line to a close win over Strupp at the end of the twenty lap event giving the youngster two wins for the event as Kurtz had captured the Empire Region event at the Accord Speedway on Wednesday night. Zack Weisenfluh continued his great work with a late pass of Gruber to snare third place with Kyle Gruber in fourth and hard driving Taylor Eccles recovering from a skirmish early on in the event to drive back through the field to claim a solid fifth place finish. Kevin Predmore, Tyler Peet, Bobby Flood, Caitlin Henneforth and newcomer Brody Adamsky completed the top ten finishers.
The closing event of the evening was the 25-lap headliner for the All Star Slingshot racers and the event proved to be another classic in the annals of Hamlin Speedway history. First year Hamlin racers Gary Dennis and Joe Howey brought the 25-car starting field to the starting line for the unfurling of starter Russ Furry's green flag. Dennis hopped into the lead with Howey nipping at his heels and Kyle Rode, wasting no time whatsoever, chasing the pair in his Frank Smith Surveyors sponsored speed buggy. Five laps into the event saw Rode emerge with the lead as he slipped by Dennis and one later into the event a caution flew as a remote incident left a few cars disabled including reigning National Slingshot Champion Shannon Smith and contender Gary Dennis. When the racing resumed it was "The Hot Rod" at the point with some new challengers beginning to show their hand and their bumpers as "The Eynon Aggressor" Ben Whitaker muscled his way into the runner-up slot and set sail for Rode. Tenth place starting and recent Hamlin 100 winner "The Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca found the needed daylight to hustle his way into third place. From ninth starting place came the 2009 National Slingshot Champion Cody Kline and Kline used a variety of Hamlin real estate to become a player in the event. "The Sheriff" Simon Egan found some needed ammunition from 13th starting place and "The Closer" Mike Fogler was following Egan's gunpowder trail to become a contender. "The Rocketman" Ryan Wood, back in a Slingshot in a guest appearance, raced forward from a 17th place start and "The Electric Man" Colin White sizzled through the field after starting from 22nd position. Mack Brink from 19th, and Paul Ennes from 21st added to the list of drivers who were able to figure out the new track surface and emerge as contenders for the win.
Whitaker tried time and time again to dislodge Rode from the point but Rode was determined and didn't waiver as he kept hitting his marks to continue to lead the event. Buccafusca began to stick the nose of his race car underneath Whitaker and made Whitaker play defense for a few laps to hold off the youngster and it allowed for Rode to catch his breath and drive away for a great win at the speedway and a great win for the Rode Family race team. Whitaker was solid in his role as the runner-up and Buccafusca continues to impress everyone with his talent and winning attitude as the Garden Stater was a Monday night visitor to the popular and award winning CARQUEST Gasoline Alley TV/Internet show hosted by Ed and Steve Pados. Cody Kline was smooth as silk in collecting fourth place money and Simon Egan completed the top five. Mike Fogler, Ryan Wood, Colin White, Mack Brink and Paul Ennes completed the top ten that showed 21 of the 25 completing all 25-laps of the feature event.
Austin Burke executued "Burke's Law" as he raced his Burke Trucking non-winger into the lead in the rookie 600 Micro clash and showed his tailfeathers to the entire field as he nailed his marks lap after lap to gain his second consecutive win at the speedway. "The J-Shot" Jacob Hendershot stayed with Burke throughout the event and eighth place starting Eddie Strada continues to impress the local railbirds at the speedway as the "South Canaan Sensation" has quickly learned the ropes of the open wheel division with a greta third place run. Simon Egan donned the revolvers and did double duty and raced hard to a fourth place finish in the maiden voyage of the S&S Speedways open wheeler. Tim Howell completed the top five. Sixth through tenth were Larry Mekic, Justin Brewster, Riley Moczulski, New Hampshire driving talent Luke Greenwood and Empire State wheelman Stephen Reynolds.
"The Bushkill Bullet" Kyle Rohner, fresh off a runner-up performance at the Accord Speedway on Friday evening at the Accord Speedway in the full sized race cars, took the lead from his pole start with the one of the hottest drivers in the country Jeff Hartman nipping at his heels. The pair of dualing racing stars were on the right on the money as they mirrored each other on the race track with move after move in searching for the quickest real estate available to them. Rohner, in only his fourth start in the Phillips racing entry, has adapted to the new division with ease as led the field through the first 15-laps of the event. Disaster struck Rohner as the field got into lapped traffic on the fifteenth lap of the event. Seeking to find a way to keep Hartman behind him while moving through traffic, Rohner got up over the wheel of a fellow competitor and was launched across the racetrack with all of the front runners scrambling and spinning and blocking the race track. Rohner was sent to the back of the pack for the restart and third place running Jonathan Hull was eliminated from the event as was the lapped car of Rick Calvert. Hartman now in the lead and Brett Michalski taking up the chase. The final ten laps were run without incident as Hartman captured the win and his second of the week after being victorious at the Kutztown Fairgrounds on Wednesday night. Michalski was the runner-up with Kyle Lick in third place, Massachusetts traveling man Mick D'Agostino in fourth and steady Jay Hartman competing the top five. Brian Gilmore, Shannon Smith in a great driving performance, Austin Burke, Billy Clark and Brett Arndt completed the top ten.
Scott Avery took the lead at the start of the rookie 270 Micro feature but slide up the raceway in turn two allowing Hayden Miller to seize the point with Makenzie Harper challenging. West Hartford, Connecticut hot shoe Grady Johnston moved past Harper and set sail for the leader Miller. Racing for position on lap-16, Miller and Johnston touched wheels with Miller losing the handle and sliding around backwards. On the restart it was Johnston cruising to his first win at Hamlin with Paul Rimsky scoring a runner-up in best best finish to date, Miller rallying back to third, newcomer Jenna Wediner in fourth and Harper completing the top five.
Tommy Kunsman Jr scored his first 2011 win at the speedway and did so in convincing fashion as he led all laps on his way to an appearance victory lane. Hard-driving and hard luck campaigner Larry Hoagland finally shook off the demons that had been hindering his track work at the speedway as he drove to a solid runner-up finish with Gene Burd in third place, CJ Heinig in fourth and "The Cadillac Man" Kurt Bettler completing the top five.
The Super Slinger shootout was another classic as the excitement was plentiful with "Double J" Jimmy Johnston leading the first seven laps before yielding to the S&S firepower of Dale Kober. Kober was cat-quick as took the lead and clicked off the fastest times of the night for the division at 14.184 seconds per lap. Before Kober could get comfortable and go to cruise control a new challenger arose as Lake Ariel resident Charlie Bodine shook off the ring rust of a couple of seasons and returned to the racing wars as if he never left as he chased Kober down in traffic to put in a good solid effort as he chased Kober to the flag with a runner-up finish. Aaron Henneforth drove his H-4 Property Management hot rod to a third place finish with hard charging Henry Anderson in fourth place and Wes Hearn completing the top five. Jimmy Johnston ended up in sixth place with Tom Arntz, Paul Ennes, Bob Clark and Jerry Hughes completing the top ten finishers.
POCO-NOTES:
The Smith Family in keeping pace with the great competition at the speedway added additional clay to the racing surface during the past week and the concentrated effort paid off in dividends with great racing taking place in all divisions. The track was extremely racy and the side by side action was appreciated by another great fan count for the racing activity. Randy Smith took some needed breaks in the racing action by giving the track surface a much needed drink of water throughout the evening.
New racers were again in abundance as the Super Slingers had Charlie Bodine, Zach and Jenna Weidner returned to the 270 Micro ranks as did Kyle Rutledge, who did double duty when he hopped a ride in the Tom Arntz equipment for a go in the Slingshot wars. Tony Iudicello, Joseph J Smith and Brett Arndt returned to action and Hudson, New Hampshire hot shoe made a return to Hamlin and did double duty in the family owned racers. Dan Beacon made his third appearance of the season at Hamlin and was impressive as he was steady in second place in the rookie 600's until mechanical woes forced him to the sidelines. The Beacon racer is wrenched by Modified talent Joe Eisenhauer who for many seasons was a fixture at the old Lake Mocatek raceway. Mark Henneforth borrowed his brother's ride to make a good showing the Slingshot main event in 15th position.
Heat race wins went to Chris Kurtz and Kyle Gruber in the Juniors while Justin Brewster and Austin Burke claimed wins in the Rookie 600's. All Star Slingshot heat winners were Gary Dennis, Shannon Smith and Ben Whitaker while Mack Brink captured the 12-lap B-Main.
