Hamlin, PA - Greth, Dippel, Burd, Martin, Hearn, Burke, And Avery Share Hamlin Speedway Gold In Great Night Of Racing Action
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
After many race tracks fell victim to Mother Nature on Friday evening, the heavy storms blew out of the area and Saturday brought on some beautiful warm summer weather with gentle blowing breezes into the Pocono Mountains. Hamlin Speedway Promoters Denise and Randy Smith welcomed in the great weather, a large crowd and 131 eager racers to the speedway grounds to produce another fabulous racing card. When the racing was completed, seven talented performers hit the speedway jackpot with New Cumberland, Pennsylvania hot shoe Ryan Greth leading the way in a wire to wire triumph in the Mid-Summer Spectacular 40-lap event for the Wingless 600 Micros to the tune of a $1,000.00 payday for he and car owner Wayne Lesher. Tyler Dippel in the All Star Slingshots, Wes Hearn in the Super Slingers, Dylan Martin in the Junior Slingshots, Austin Burke in the Rookie Wingless 600's, Gene Burd in the 270 Micros, and Scott Avery in the Rookie 270 Micros all added notches to their gunbelts in the tremendous show that had the great crowd on hand heading home by 10:30. The seven feature program hustled through the evening on a smooth racing surface and was sponsored for the evening by Tilcon, dickie Keiper Racing Supplies and Walker Plumbing and Heating.
After a series of hotly contested heat events, time trials and B-Mains, the first of the seven feature events rolled onto the raceway for the stars of tomorrow in the Junior Slingshot division. Seventeen young men and ladies started the twenty lap excursion and pole sitting Caitlin Henneforth gunned her H-4 Property Management sponsored car into the lead at the drop of the green flag. Leading into turn one, the throttle on her race car stuck wide open and Henneforth did an admirable job of hanging on to the race car as she slid up the raceway and out of contention. The turn of events opened the door for "Thrillin" Dylan Martin and the youngster from Stroudsburg seized the opportunity to drive his Mark Gray Automotive sponsored hot rod into the lead with Kyle Gruber following closely behind. Thomas Strupp was quick to join the front pair of racers as the action heated up behind the leaders. Martin set the pace and opened up a seven car length lead on the field that was slowed at mid-point by the spinning Empire State racer Evan Van Valkenburg.. When the event restarted Martin was still at the point with Strupp now in second, Gruber third, Chris Kurtz in fourth and Mohnton racer "The Weasel" Jacob Dunn turning the fastest laps on the track to move into contention. Dunn was relentless from the top of the raceway as he drove past his foes to begin to close in on Martin. Lapped traffic slowed Martin in the final few laps and Dunn clicked off the best laps of the evening and made a couple of attempts to wrest the lead away from Martin. After taking the white flag, Martin held off Dunn in turn two but a lapped car caused Martin to check up as the pair raced into turn three side by side. Maertin dove to the bottom of the slower car and got a better run off of turn four to score his fourth win of the season at the Hamlin oval. Dunn was spectacular in a runner-up role with "The Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh using a late flurry to corral a third place finish. Thomas Strupp was fourth and Kyle Gruber was fifth in the final rundwon with Chris Kurtz, Allison Kaminski, Kevin Predmore, newcomer Brody Adamsky and last week's winner Bobby Flood completing the top ten.
West Hartford, Connecticut's Grady Johnston took off at the drop of the green flag in the run for the Rookie 270 main event and seemingly was in control of the event net as he maintained a six car length lead at the midway point of the event. Just as Johnston was putting a lap on newcomer Josh Schaffer, the pair got together and Johnston went up in the air but remained in the lead although it appeared there was some damage on the race car. As the laps wound down Johnston was cautious and possibly too cautious as runner-up Scott Avery closed in behind him. In the final two turns disaster struck Johnston as he became tangled with a slower car and the quickly approaching Avery used the clear portion of the race track to drive by and score the win over the heartbroken Johnston. Cheyanne Schaffer was third with Hayden Miller rallying back for fourth and newcomer Doug Evanuski completing the top five.
The Rookie 600 Micro main event saw Justin Brewster charge out front with the lead and Austin Burke and Jacob Hendershot in quick pursuit. Brewster's lead was short-lived after three laps as he lost the handle in turn three and turned his racer around. On the restart it was Burke on the hammer out front with Hendershot, Eddie Strada and Empire State driving talent Stephen Reynolds now applying the pressure. The racing was heating up as Hendershot spun out before the midway point and was forced to make a comeback from the rear of the field. Burke was still in command with "The South Canaan Sensation" Strada in his third event in the 600's applying heavy pressure to the high-flying Burke. With a few laps remaining, Reynolds saw his great drive go away when he was turned around in turn two. On the restart Burke and Strada put on a great show for the fans with Burke scoring the win with Strada in second, "The Harmony Heat" Greg Stevens in third, Larry Mekic in fourth and "The J-Shot" Jacob Hendershot rallying back to compete the top five.
The Super Slinger feature proved once again to be the Wes Hearn Show as the Greentown, Pennsylvania hot shoe drove away from the field at the drop of the green flag and led all laps to capture his second consecutive feature event win at the speedway. Paul Ennes kept pace with Hearn but settled for second with Dale Kober racing through the field from eleventh starting spot to grab third place. Aaron Henneforth was solid throughout the event to finish fourth and "The Harmony Hurricane" Roger Collins rallied back from an early spin to complete the top five. Henry Anderson, Jerry Hughes, newcomer Jim Conroy, Jimmy Johnston and PJ Dempsey rounded out the top ten finishers.
"The Machine" Gene Burd, the defending champion of the division at the speedway, hopped into one of the Widdos entries for the evening and took off like a shot out of a cannon from his third place start to seize the lead before the field hit turn one. Once in front, Burd carved out a big lead into the halfway point of the event. Matt Mountz pulled up lame on lap fourteen and on the restart it was Burd out front with "The Aviator" Robbie Watson hustling his mount in behind Burd. Burd did not waiver as he sped to the win with Watson in second place, Kurt Bettler in third, Tommy Kunsman fourth, Richie O'Neill in fifth and Shannon Smith doing triple duty in the second Widdos car with a sixth place finish.
The headliner for the All Star Slingshots saw 24 of the best Slingshot drivers in the country duke it out on the Hamlin Speedway real estate. The early going found "Speed Racer" Hunter Smith grabbing the lead at the start of the event from his pole start. Smith was solid for the first four laps but slid up the racecourse in turn two to allow the current National Junior Slingshot Champion Tyler Dippel to take over the point. Troy Langendoerfer slipped by Smith one lap later to take up the chase after Dippel and it appeared as though the Smith racer was now experiencing some handling problems. "The Electric Man" Colin White joined in the chase along with Robbie Hocker and by the mid-point of the event it was "Chargin" Charlie Lawrence making lots of noise from his twelfth place start. All eyes were on Lawrence as the Empire Region Slingshot Champion was masterful in his climb into contention. One by one Lawrence was able to move past those in front of him as he took over the runner-up role and set sail after Dippel. A 19th lap restart bunched the field together and set the stage for a six lap shootout between the leaders. Dipple maintained his composure as he fought off all of the advances from Lawrencehe as he held on to score his first win in regular Slingshot competition at the speedway. Lawrence scored his second straight runner-up finish with Troy Langendoerfer in third place, Colin White in fourth and Robbie Hocker completiing the top five. Shannon Smith headed up second five with John Rooks Jr, Dale Kober from seventeenth, Danny Buccafusca and Simon Egan completing the top ten.
The Mid Summer 600 Wingless 40-lap main event proved to be the Ryan Greth show as the Central Pennsylvania driving talent earned a front row starting spot with a win in the Dash For Cash. Brett Michalski, returning to the speedway after a hard crash from a week ago that saw him get upside down, followed in behind Greth with Jay Hartman, Jonathan Hull and Brian Gilmore following. Jeff Hartman, the recent champion of the Pennyslvania 600 Speedweeks fell back in the early going and got turned around before the first ten laps were completed forcing him to restart from the rear of the field. As the laps clicked off, Greth was able to maintain his lead despite heavy pressure from Michalski and Jay Hartman and the Carber Brothers, Mike and Brian. A lap fourteen incident saw Jonathan Hull get upside down as he battled for position with Brian Gilmore and both cars suffered damage and had to be towed from the racing surface. Another incident slowed the field on lap-20 as Brett Schoenly was forced into the Jersey barriers resulting in damage to his race car. On the restart problems once again beset Michalski as he slowed in turn two ending his night. With Greth fending off the advances of Jay Hartman, the intense racing action behind them saw some heroic efforts taking place. Jeff Hartman was rallying through the field as he became quicker as the race wore on. Kyle "The Hot" Lick was on a mission of his own as he drove from 13th starting spot to become a player in the event. Austin Burke began the event from 16th position and used a series of moves to put himself into contention. B-Main transfers Shelby Harper, Kyle Rohner and Jacob Hendershot were finding some workable real estate to join the chase to the front. Greth was superb in hitting his marks and maintaining the lead and Jay Hartman was relentless in keeping up the attack. Jeff Hartman found the rhythm and was the fastest race car on the track in the closing stages of the event. As starter Russ Furry unfurled the final checkered flag of the evening it was Greth scoring the win and earning the $1,000.00 pay day with Jay Hartman, Mike Carber, Jeff Hartman and Kyle Lick completing the top five. Brian Carber, Austin Burke, Shelby Harper, Billy Clark, Alex Curley, Kyle Rohner and Joesph Smith completed the top twelve finishers.
