Hamlin, PA - Nine Feature Events With Charlie Shaver Winning Two Highlight Successful Evening At Hamlin Speedway
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
The Pocono Mountains have suffered through a wet summer thus far this season and while Mother Nature has hindered the number of races hosted at the Hamlin Speedway in 2011 it hasn't diminished the ultimate need for speed for the 120 talented racers that converged into the speedway pit area on Saturday evening as the heavy rain from Thursday and Friday gave way to a perfect Saturday. After a week off due to inclement weather, the Smith Family was able to get back on track and present another banner night of racing activity for the packed house of eager racing fans who came out to enjoy their racing heroes performing on the well groomed 1/5 mile speedway. Playing catch-up with two postponed races from way back on May 21st when the racing was halted due to heavy fog, the well-trained speedway staff was able to present the entire hotly contested regular show of seven feature events plus the two make-up events and complete the exciting show by 10:30 PM.
The Super Slingers kicked off the main events and it was Greentown hot shoe Wes Hearn racing to the upper reaches of the speedway from his fourth starting spot to grab the lead coming off of turn two on the opening lap. Hearn threatened to make it a runaway in the early laps but as the racing hit the midway point Charlie Shaver was back to task as he sized up a fast lane to slip by Hearn. The winning moment came on lap fifteen as Shaver used a full head of steam to pull even with Hearn and then knife by with the skill of a surgeon. Once in front it was the Shaver show as he whisked through the remaining laps with 14.5 second clockings per lap to capture the checkered flag and a trip to the Hamlin Speedway Victory Circle. Wes Hearn was in for the runner-up slot in a great run with hard-driving Henry Anderson capturing third place, PJ Dempsey fourth in a uniform finish and Paul Ennes completing the top five.
Tommy Kunsman Jr and Robbie Watson led the winged warriors of the 270 Micros to the line for the start if their makeup feature event and Watson was quick to go topside as the pair of wingers dove into turn one and came out of turn two with the lead with Kunsman in tow. Watson was able to runaway and hide for the first twenty laps of the event but came upon lapped traffic as the five to go sign was displayed. Watson was cautious as he attempted to move by the traffic and possibly two cautious as now second place man Jarid Kunkle was eating up big chunks of the Hamlin clay as he reeled in the leader. As the white flag fell Watson's lead was down to two car lengths and Kunkle was sizing up his options to go for broke. As the leaders hit turn three, a wisp of daylight on the bottom of the speedway allowed Watson to make the run for the flag and capture the win over the too close for comfort Kunkle. It was a great race and "The Aviator" Robbie Watson gained his first win of the season over the smooth running Kunkle. Tommy Kunsman Jr, "The Hurricane" Harlee Schaffer and Trevor Dunn completed the top five.
The seventeen car starting car field for the Junior Slingshots kicked off the regular feature events and the field was bolstered by many of the young racers who have been poundeing the Accord Speedway clay this season. "Scoot" Taylor Eccles seized the lead at the drop of the green flag and Mohnton's Jacob Dunn was quick to try and weasle his way by the Garden State racer. Dunn came close to getting it done on numerous occasions but Eccles held his ground and remained the leader. Coming off of turn two just before the halfway mark of the event, Dunn gave it all he had and lost the handle of the race car and spun to the infield. On the restart, a six-car posse of young hot rodders took up the chase after Eccles and it was "The Midget" Chris Kurtz who found the magic to race from his twelfth starting spot to race into the top five. Kurtz was finding extreme bite off of the bottom of the raceway and soon was the runner-up and chasing Eccles but it was Eccles prevailing with a win and a trip to victory circle in what is believed to be his first ever win at Hamlin. Kurtz was the runner-up with the much improved Thomas Strupp in third, "Thrillin" Dylan Martin in fourth and "The Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh recovering from an early spin to race his way back through the field and finish fifth. Kevin Predmore, Tyler Johnston, Allison Kaminski in her first appearance in the recently purchased former Dale Reed racer, Jacob Dunn and "Kid Ice" Cole Hentschel completing the top ten.
"Lightning" Larry Mekic took the lead at the start of the Rookie 600 Wingless Micro event but it was "The Jet" Justin Brewster who was soon challenging for the top spot. Mekic was getting a lot of mileage from his racer as the pair duked it out for the lead and on lap nine it was Brewster driving by to seize the point. "J-Shot" Jacob Hendershot, who came into the event fresh off a Wednesday night win at Accord, took up the chase and was able to execute the pass of Brewster as the pair got into lapped traffic. Hendershot led the remaining laps to claim the win with Brewster continuing his great work to claim the runner-up spot. Stony Point, New York wheelman Steve Reynolds showed a ton of moxie in a great run to third place and Danielle dickinson performing well with a fourth place finish, Timmy Howell completing the top five and "Rimac" Riley Moczulski enhoying a great run in sixth.
The Rookie 270 Micro feature had Cheyanne Schaffer guiding her race car to the point at the opening bell and dominating the action as she captured the win in a wire to wire triumph at the speedway. Hayden Miller continued his great work with a solid runner-up run and Makenzie Harper was third with Craig Fedoryk in fourth and Scott Avery completing the top five.
Jarid Kunkle took the lead at the start of the 270 Micro feature event and led the first twelve laps while being dogged by "Flyin" Ryan Smith, who began his run for the roses from eighth starting position. Kunkle was quick but fell to a hard charging Smith off of turn two on the thirteenth lap of the 25-lap main event. Once in front, Smith peddled away from the field to record the win over a hard driving Tommy Kunsman Jr with Kunkle in third, Robbie Watson in fourth and Trevor Dunn completing the top five.
"Double J" Jimmy Johnston took advantage of a rare row row starting spot to take the lead at the start of the regularly scheduled Super Slinger feature and had things going his way for the first twelve laps of the event until Charlie Shaver charged through from his fifth starting spot to pull up alongside of Johnson off of turn two to gain the the advantage and never looked back as Shaver gained win number two for the evening's events. Johnston had a great outing in a runner-up role with Aaron Henneforth driving from ninth place to finish third, PJ Dempsey was fourth and Henry Anderson completing the top five.
Brett Michalski took off at the start of the 600 Wingless feature and was able to drive off in his own zone early in the event and ripped off vast hunks of real estate to carve out a big lead. Some cautions slowed the pace a bit and allowed "The Incredible" Jonathan Hull to drive into the runner-up slot with some great driving off of the top of the raceway. The action behind the frontmen was fabulous as multi-grooves and daredevil moves proved to be a big hit with the great crowd on hand. There was no stopping Michalski as he captured the win with Hull close behind. Billy Clark continued his great work at the speedway with a third place finish in his four-coil Hyper and "The Minuteman" Alex Curley enjoyed a great drive with a fourth place finish. Kyle "The Hot" Lick completed the top five in his Terry's Drive Train sponsored racer. "The Bushkill Bullet" Kyle Rohner was sixth in his first ever 600 event in the Ronda and Gary Phillips owned hot rod and the returning to action Joe Kata was seventh in his first event after flipping hard a couple of weeks ago at the speedway. ARDC Midget ace Erik Heydenreich was eighth in his Hamlin debut, "The Rocketman" Ryan Wood was ninth and rounding out the top ten was Tony Iudicello.
Defending track champion Dale Kober took the lead at the start of the Allstar Slingshot headliner. A couple of restarts slowed the pace but Kober was up to the task at hand and held his ground as he fought off the advances of the quick Charlie Shaver who was bound and determined to go for the Hamlin hat trick of claiming three events in one evening. Kober held on lap after lap as Shaver was electric in his attempts to slip by the champ. Kober held on and scored the win with Shaver in the runner-up role, John Pantis silently rolling into thrid place, Billy Clark in fourth and Henry Anderson settling for fifth place. Shannon Smith, Charlie Lawrence, Don Schmidt, Jeff Cosgrove and Mack Brink completed the to ten finishers that saw 22 of the 24 starters complete the event in a closely matched competitive feature run.
POCO-NOTES:
The hotly contested racing began on time and the staff kept moving the program along swiftly with a couple of breaks taken to add mositure to the track surface and keep the race track racy throughout the evening.
Heat race wins were claimed by Taylor Eccles and Caitlin Henneforth in the Juniors. Jacob Hendershot and Justin Brewster prevailed in the 600 Rookie Wingless heat events. The 270 Micros featured two heats with Jarid Kunkle and Trevor Dunn claiming wins. Super Slinger heats went to PJ Dempsey and Charlie Shaver. Joe Kata and Brett Michalski claimed the 600 Wingless Micro heats. The Rookie 270 Micro heat was won by Cheyanne Schaffer. Charlie Shaver, John Pantis and Dale Kober captured the Slingshot heats with Russell Benke capturing the B-Main
New cars continue to arrive at the speedway and one in particular has made the successful transition into the 600 ranks in only his second season of racing. Eddie Strada made his debut in 600 racing on Wednesday night at the Accord Speedway with a sixth place finish and followed on Saturday with his first Hamlin racing in the rookie 600's and scored a ninth place finish in the former Brian Davis owned Micro. Kyle Rohner, who is the defending Spec Sportsman Champion at the Accord Speedway, enjoyed his first outing in the 600's as he was able to race among the leaders throughout in the close-competition event. The Rohner machine was a former Luke Thomas Hyper machine that was purchased by the Phillips Family in the spring. Marc Daniels was able to borrow one of the S&S Speedway cars for Super Slinger action. Duane White was back in action in his 270 Micro. Bill Darcy returned to racing action for the first time in a year and had the misfortune of getting upside down in hte main event and suffred enough damage to sit out the remainder of the event. Ellington, Connecticut's Kendall Segar continues to make sporadic visits to the speedway and improves with each outing. Mike Caropolo took his first laps at Hamlin is some time and it was great to see in action in his Hyper mount. Erik Heydenreich made his Hamlin debut and did well despite having some handling problems with the race car, but Heydenreich is a veteran of ARDC competition and manhandled the racer to a good finish in his first outing. Former Go Kart racer at the speedway Ryan Lacoe had his sharp slinger on hand but didn't make the final transfer into the main event. New drivers in the Junior Slingshot ranks continue to roll into the raceway. Carly Dippel, Leo Fotopolous, Cole Hentschel and Tyler Johnston, all Accord regulars made the Junior event one of the highlights of the evening racing as all of the stars of tomorrow handled themselves well on the race track. Allison Kaminski, who competed once before at Hamlin in Shannon Smith' machine, did well in her first appearance in the former Dale Reed slinger. Reed, who had expressed a desire to step away from racing and did so at the end of May, will be missed by his many fans at the speedway.
Charlie Shaver came within one spot of claiming three wins in one evening at the speedway. Shaver had a fast hot rod all evening long and did some amazing work in what has to be his best performance in his racing career.
The speedway will be dark next week with some time off for vacation and will swing back into action for the July 2nd running of the fourth annual Firecracker 100 at the speedway with a whopping $2,000.00 on the line for the winner should the speedway have 45 entries at race time.
