Hamlin, PA - Gene Burd Flies High In Wire To Wire Triumph To Spotlight Hamlin Speedway Winners Circle
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
While thunderstorms in the immediate surrounding area kept the weather picture unpredictable, the highly successful Hamlin Speedway promotional team of Randy and Denise Smith threw caution to the wind and rolled the dice to present another spectacular and entertaining racing card for the great fans and the seven divisions of racing talent that filled the Hamlin Speedway speed arena last evening. With 133 entries signed in to do battle at the Smith Family's Pocono Mountains playground, the racing format changed to round robin time trials and feature events as the top-notch race staff quickly amended the racing card and presented an exciting show that showed excellent competition in all racing divisions. When all was said and done, the dickie Keiper Racing Supplies sponsored evening saw defending 270 Micro Sprint track champion Gene "The Machine" Burd borrow the Widdos Racing entry for the evening and go on to capture the Micro Dash and later collect the $750.00 barrel of cash in a wire to wire run to victory in the 270 Micro Sprint challenge event. "Thrillin" Dylan Martin captured his second consecutive win in the Junior Slingshot feature, and new 2011 event winners included John Bockhorn in the Slingshots, Henry Anderson in the Super Slingers, Justin Brewster in the Rookie 600's, Connecticut invader Jonathan Hull in the Regular 600's and Luke Kroboth in the rookie 270's. With an abundance of racing talent on the grounds, each feature attraction took on new meaning with the many seasoned veterans and stars of tomorrow performing their special brand of magic on the racy and well manicured 1/5 mile speedway.
Kicking off the feature racing action found the Junior Slingshots taking to the Hamlin oval for their 20-lap feature event. Mohnton, Pennsylvania hot shoe Jacob Dunn grabbed the lead at the start and early on threatened to make a runaway of the exciting action. Newcomer Tyler Peet lost the handle on lap twelve and took a hard hit against the Jersey barrier in turn four bringing out the caution. Peet, a first year future star, was unhurt in the incident but a tad shaken up. When racing resumed, Martin took advantage of the slow starting Dunn and pulled up alongside of him in the middle of the homestretch and grabbed the lead driving into turn one. Dunn tried to counter but Martin was quicker off of the corners and led the remaining laps to claim his second consecutive Hamlin win and third win of the season in Slingshot competition. Jacob Dunn, in an excellent drive, was the runner-up with 12th place starting Chris Kurtz racing to a third place finish. Kyle Gruber was fourth and Caitlin Henneforth rounded out the top five.
Former Slingshot racer Justin Brewster led wire to wire to claim his first win the rookie 600 Micro event but the race was exciting from the drop of the first green flag as New Egypt Speedway Sportsman star "Iron" Mike Butler took his first ride in a 600 as a birthday present from his brother track champion Bobby Butler and the Atlantic City Slingshot winner didn't disappoint as he quickly found the fast way around the oval using a variety of moves to chase Brewster to the finish line to claim the runner-up honors to the quick running "Jet'.
Jamie Czekai is enjoying his new status in the rookie 600's as he finished third in a great drive with another former Slingshot racer Danielle dickinson in fourth and Tim Howell completing the top five.
Joe Bodenschatz, in his Strupp Racing entry, took command of the Super Slinger feature from his pole start and was quickly pressured by division champion Paul Ennes, Tommy Vroom Jr and Henry Anderson as the racing heated up lap after lap. Vroom fell by the wayside on lap fifteen and a restart was needed to assist him from the racetrack. When racing resumed Anderson was all about pressure as he maneuvered his Mike Griffin State Farm Insurance sponsored hot rod to the point with an inside move in turn three. Once in front, Anderson withstood a late charge from Dale Kober to capture the win. Bodenschatz was third in a great effort with Aaron Henneforth in fourth and Paul Ennes completing the top five finishers.
The 600 Micro feature action had Connecticut driving star Jonathan Hull blasting out of the starting blocks to lead the way in the star-studded main event for the wingless warriors but a first lap mishap between two spinning cars left Joe Kata no place to go and he went upside down ending his night early on. When racing resumed it was Hull on the hammer as he was able to maintain his lead throughout the entire event and go on to capture his first win of the new season at Hamlin. Bridgewater, New Jersey driving star Jeff Hartman finished in the runner-up role with hard driving Brett Michalski finishing third, Kyle Lick from 12th position finished fourth in an excellent ride, and "The Conductor" Bobby Butler completed the top five. Billy Clark, Jay Hartman, hard luck kid Tony Iudicello, Shayne Ely and Brian Gilmore completed the top ten finishers.
Luke Kroboth jumped out front at the start of the rookie 270 Micro main event and captured his first win of the season with a solid wire to wire run. The vastly improved Hayden Miller was the runner-up with opening night winner Cheyanne Schaffer finishing up in third place. Makenzie Harper and TJ Lilly completed the top five.
Bloomingdale, New Jersey talent John Bockhorn out-gunned Simon Egan at the start of the headliner for the Slingshot race cars and maintained his lead early on despite the constant pressure from Egan. Egan tried high and low to slip by the leader but Bockhorn was up to the challenge as he controlled the point with his great drives off of the top of the raceway. Sixth place starting Cody Kline became a player at the midway point of race and Egan soon had to play a bit of defense to keep the 2009 National champion at bay. As the race drew to the latter stages, Kline was able get a great run off of the bottom of turn two to slip by Egan and set sail for the leader. While it appeared that lapped traffic may become a factor in the event, a late caution flag flew to slow the field once more. The final green flag saw Bockhorn with his hands full with Kline throwing everything he had at him in his Billy Weaver owned racer and as the checkered flag flew from starter Russ Furry it was the Creative Auto Interior sponsored hot rod of John Bockhorn prevailing to score his first win of the new season at Hamlin. Kline was second in an excellent showing with Egan peddling hard to make it a three way fight for the win but settling for third place money. Dale Kober used a late race charge to claim fourth place with Henry Anderson finishing up in fifth. Newcomer Don Schmidt continuing his great early season work to finish in sixth place with Jimmy Johnston, Colin White, Russell Benke and rookie Eddie Strada completing the top ten. Most insiders at the speedway agreed the feature run was without question one of the most entertaining and competitive Slingshot feature events they had ever witnessed as 21 of the 24 starters were all within striking distance when the race was completed.
Track champion Gene Burd began the headliner for the 270 Micro Sprints at the point and as quickly as the race went green a tip-over for Connecticut driving star CJ Heinig slowed the pace. Heinig was able to restart the event. When racing resumed, Kyle Rutledge, in the former Mike Esposito ride, went upside down to halt the action and also claimed Shannon Smith in the incident. Back to green flag racing when the track was cleared, Burd was up to the task as he was able to put a ton of distance on the field until "The Boss" Ross Perchak drove into the picture. Perchak was utilizing the same race car Ryan Smith won with a week ago and once he cleared the quick running "Hurricane" Harlee Schaffer was able to close in on Burd but sensing the challenge Burd turned up the wick and blistered the speedway with a new one-lap track record of 11.548 seconds to drive his way into the Hamlin Speedway Victory Circle. Perchak was the runner-up in a great drive with Schaffer in third and Pennsylvania invader Richie "The Kid" Hartman making a rare appearance to finish up in fourth place. Tommy Kunsman Jr completed the top five. Larry Hoagland appears to have shaken off his tough luck from, a season ago to head up the second five with New Englander Todd Bertrand, Robbie Watson and teammates Matt Mountz and Trevor Dunn completing the top ten.
POCO-NOTES:
The early season action at Hamlin thus far has produced excellent side by racing action and despite the unpredictable weather had a great field of race cars and a nice crowd on hand to witness the exciting racing action. New faces at the speedway for the 270's included Ross Perchak in a guest role while Todd Bertrand, Kendall Segar and Matt Seymour from the New England States added some chowder to the entry list. Stan Wall took over the Ziggy Thomashunis mount from a week ago but didn't make the feature cut. Former go karter Ryan Lacoe was on hand in his first Slingshot start and John Rooks Sr and Jr were both on hand in their first Hamlin starts of the season. Tommy Vroom Jr made his first start and had a fast mount under him until problems took him out of the main event. Kevin Olver also made his first start of the season.
