Roy Smith Memorial At Borgers Saturday October 16.
In the early 1950’s existed a rare breed of men who were responsible for the sport of Modified Stock Car Racing. In it’s infancy they nurtured Modified Stock Car Racing to the success and popularity it enjoys today. These were “Seat Of Your Pants Racers” who went to the barn or garage in back of their home and built racecars. Racecar manufactures did not exist in those days. These cars were built from junkyard cars and parts they built in their shops and turned into high powered racing machines.
One of these men was the man we are honoring this weekend. Roy Smith drove one race and decided that driving a racecar was not for him. What he did know was that he could build racecars and make them go fast. Many of the top drivers in the northeast drove and won with Roy Smith built racecars among them the legendary Freddy Adam. Soon two of Roy’s sons would get the urge and there was only one thing to do and that was to build cars for them. Stellar Nazareth and Orange County Fair Speedway competitors Richie and Randy Smith owe their success in racing to their father Roy. While the elder brother Bob did not drive he was an instruments part of the team in the garage and at the track.
Today Richie Smith is the creator and builder of the Stage One Modifieds while Randy Smith, along with his wife Denise owns S&S Speedways and promotes races at Hamlin Speedway.
The racing legacy is carried on by his grandchildren Ryan, Shannon, Joel, Brett, and Bob Jr. who are all accomplished racers.
Behind every great man is a great woman. The matriarch of the Smith family Evelyn stood by Roy and the family being a pillar of strength throughout the years. It would be hard pressed to find a woman more proud of her family then Evelyn and she will be in victory lane presenting the Roy Smith Memorial awards to the winner of the AllStar Slingshot feature.
The AllStar Slingshots will compete in a National Slingshot Tour Race for $555 representing Roy Smith’s famous number known as “The Triple Nickel.” Action will also feature the Jr. Slingshots, Hoosier 270 Sprints, and the Stage One Modifieds. This being the last tour race for 2010 all the top drivers in the northeast will be in action. Racing gets underway with warm-ups at 4:00 p.m. and the first heat at 5:00 p.m.
Those of us who knew Roy and called him “Friend” were truly blessed and privileged to know him and the importance of his contributions to the sport. Be a part of honoring Roy Smith at the Roy Smith Memorial at Borgers Speedway this coming Saturday October 16.
