Pauch, Godown Have Serious Fun at West End Nats
GILBERT, PA - How seriously do talented 358 Modified drivers like Billy Pauch Jr. and Ryan Godown take it when they're invited to race as guests, as they were at Thursday night's West End Fair Nationals? Very.
"Let's put it this way," Pauch said in the fairgrounds pit area. "A racer is a racer. Everything you get in, you feel the need to win."
That's why you couldn't look around the sixth-of-a-mile dirt track Thursday without seeing Pauch or Godown somewhere around the perimiter. Pauch spent most of his time standing alongside the turn-three pit gate, looking for the fast lines and checking out the track. Godown did the same from the second row of the back stretch pit-area grandstands.
Both drove 39-horsepower Slingshot by Tobias race cars. Pauch took a seat in Michael Eckhart's No. 9Jr., while Godown gave Ryan Raidline's No. 00 a whirl. Both deals were set up by phone, with some help from Borger's photographer Bobby Snyder.
For Pauch, it was his first time in a Slingshot since he was 12 at the Fairgrounds at Kutztown (Pa.). For Godown, it was his first time in a Slinger since a similar guest stint at the off-season Atlantic City (N.J.) Indoor Races.
"I always like to have fun, and this is fun," Godown said. "At Atlantic City these cars stick like glue, but here it's a bit different."
The two Dual-Track Circuit stars had differing fortunes at West End. Pauch came from ninth to third to qualify through his heat race, then started from 10th and finished sixth in the 20-lap feature. Godown, who expressed concern about his outside third-row starting spot on the narrow track, missed qualifying by one spot in his heat, won his consolation race, and wound up 17th in the feature. He needed a push start during a mid-feature caution flag and needed to restart in the back of the 26-car field as a result.
Both drivers had fun and walked away with different impressions. Pauch liked watching the wingless 600cc Micro-Sprints. "They look pretty cool," said the Rider University senior. "I'd love to try one."
Godown, ever the Modified driver at heart, took a liking to the Stage One Modifieds. "Man, these things get around here pretty well," he said while watching from the pit stands.
