Ryan Smith, Walters, Glass and Joel Smith Win West End Fair Nationals
Gilbert, Pa. - Ryan Smith used some last-lap heroics to win the 20-lap Wingless 600cc Micro-Sprint headliner at the second annual West End Fair Nationals Thursday night.
Smith, of Kunkletown, Pa., lined up seventh in the 19-car field and hustled his way into second place with eight laps complete. He then closely trailed pole starter and race-long leader Rob Vivona of Staten Island, N.Y.
On the final lap, Smith charged his Jason Van Doren-owned No. 22 car to the inside of Vivona's No. 9 machine off turn two, ran side-by-side with him down the back stretch, then pulled ahead in turn three to take a stunning win. Vivona ran second, with Shelby Harper, Brett Smith and Joseph Kata III completing the top five.
The win was Smith's second straight in the Nationals. He won the 270cc Micro-Sprint portion of last year's event.
In Thursday's 270cc Micro 20-lapper, Steve Walters of Slatington, Pa., took the biggest win of his career. Walters started from third spot and took the lead on a first-lap restart after pole starter Louie Horvath, fourth-starting Rob Pajauis and others came together off turn two.
The caution-filled race was eventually stopped at 13 laps due to a time limit. Walters held off a charging Richie Hartman to take a hard-earned win. Jevon Ahner, Brandon Edgar and Pajauis completed the front five.
The 20-lap All-Star Slingshot National Tour race was a near carbon copy of last year's Nationals except for the finish. Mike Glass and Cody Kline swapped the lead back and forth for the win, with Glass prevailing this year (Kline was last year's winner). Nick Snyder, Gregg Zellman and Matt Mertz finished third-through-fifth. Dual-Track 358 Modified stars Billy Pauch Jr. and Ryan Godown finished sixth and 17th in the race.
Joel Smith led a top-three family sweep in the 20-lap Stage One Modified feature. His cousins, Brett and Bobby Smith Jr., followed.
A total of 114 cars took part in the Nationals.
