HAMLIN SPEEDWAY NEWS
Hamlin, PA - Hamlin Speedway Sidesteps Mother Nature To Complete A Great Eight Feature Show
by: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Turning a negative into a positive, the hard working Hamlin Speedway staff took full advantage of some assistance from Mother Nature to overcome a rain delay, whip the speedway back into excellent working order and complete the eight feature program before a jam-packed, wet but loyal fan base who braved the quick hitting storm to witness another excellent evening of exciting racing action in the Pocono Mountains. With another 135 plus entries piled into the pit area, the racing action on the speedway was superb and will serve as the ignition for the upcoming "Firecracker Hamlin Hundred" unfolding at the speedway this coming Saturday evening on July 3rd and will pay out a healthy $2,000.00 to the winner based on a 45 car entry field. The event will be the fourth annual running of the premier show and the Sunbury, Pennsylvania based Weis Markets supermarket chain has come on board to serve as the headline sponsor for the prestigious event.
The show kicked off with the running of the 270 Micro Sprint feature event that had been on hold since May 8th. The event carried a winner's share of $750.00 on the line and the action was hot and heavy throughout the event but proved to be a starmaker for young Austin Burke as he took the lead at the drop of Russ Furry's green flag to out-power defending track champion Nunzi Allegrucci into turn one. The Saylorsburg resident may have waivered a few times throughout the event but kept his heavy right foot on the throttle of his Burke's Trucking sponsored mount to lead the entire distance and pick up the big cash money. Allegrucci tried every trick he knew but settled for a hard fought runnerup slot. Gene Burd remained close throughout to finish third and Kurt Bettler and Robbie Watson completed the top five.
Jenna Schostkewitz and newcomer Eddie Strada brought the field down for the start of the Junior Slingshot headliner and it was Schostkewitz who powered away at the start with Strada close behind. Junior Slingshot local area feature event winners Dylan Martin and Danny Buccafusca were flexing their racing muscles behind the pair and began to search the speedway racing lines to move forward. Schostkewitz led up until lap-5 when she gave way to the "Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca as he powered off the bottom of turn two to take control of the point. With a clear track in front of him, Buccafusca opened up some big distance between he and the rest of the field in his Bruce's Speed Shop sponsored mount. "Thrillin" Dylan Martin moved in to second place but could not overcome the big advantage held by Buccafusca and finished in the runnerup slot in his Mark Gray Automotive hot rod. "The Midget" Chris Kurtz was third with Kody Welsh, Tyler Dippel, Ricky Rasiner and Eddie Strada following.
The 270 Micro Sprint rookies had recent arrival to the speedway, Lehighton resident David Ahner leading the first nine laps of the event. Burke completed the pass of Ahner on lap-10 to race on and record his second feature win of the evening. Ahner was the runnerup with Orwigsburg's Cheyanne Schaffer in third place another fast female Missi Seip finishing fourth in her first speedway appearance. Jeffrey Anderson completed the top five running order.
600 Wingless Micro action found "The Goshen Gladiator" Joe Kata jumping out front at the start of the event. Mechanical gremlins found newcomer Josh Winters, Ryan Wood and Mark Berkestock all falling out before the halfway mark. What was to follow was textbook Hamlin 101 as Kata and the "New Wild Child" Brian Gilmore became locked in a dual that had the young warriors dicing it out a fifth of a mile at a time for ten laps much to the delight of the crowd. Kata was the winner in his Showalter's Equipment speed buggy with Gilmore just a tick behind in his Pub 199/PMZ Landscaping machine.
The regular 270 Micro event proved to the frosting on the cake for track champion Nunzi Allegrucci. The Scranton resident took the lead at the drop of the green and wired the field despite repeated efforts by Wapwallopen speedster Gene Burd to dislodge him from the point. Allegrucci came across the winner with Burd in second place with a great performance and the returning Hamburg resident Ed Kenderdine in for a solid third place performance. "The Boss" Ross Perchak was third in his Perchak Trucking rocket and Rob Pajauis completed the top five.
Super Slinger action found "Double J" Jimmy Johnston taking full advantage of a front row starting spot to drive his Chestnut Hill Trailers sponsored Slinger to a wire to wire triumph despite a late charge from Carbondale gunslinger Paul Ennes. Aaron Henneforth was third in his newly purchased race car and Tommy Vroom Jr was fourth in his Priority Appraisal sponsored machine. Hard driving Henry Anderson completed the top five.
The always entertaining 600 Wingless Micros took to the speedway and the "Belvidere Bullet" Jeff Schall seemingly had things going his way for the first dozen laps of the event. As Schall was approaching lapped traffic, "Penndel Peddler" Brett Michalski closed quickly on Schall and the pair drove into turn one with Michalski in the lead and Schall spinning his racer around and bringing a caution to the field. On the restart, Michalski wasted no time in building up a big advantage over rookie 600 campaigner "The Minuteman from Massachusetts" Alex Curley and go on for the win over Curley. Curley did a great job in claiming runnerup money as he held off the advances of Kyle "The Hot" Lick who fell back a few spots at the beginning of the event and peddled his way back to claim third place. Brittany Tresch was fourth in a great drive and "The Conductor" Bobby Butler raced hard from start to finish to round out the top five.
Russell Benke drove his Jordan Towing sponsored machine to his first win in the Regular Slingshot main event. Benke, a second year performer, was in command from the start and was flawless in performance as he bested 28 of the finest Slingshot campaigners in the country to claim the victory. Former Hamlin track champion as well as National Slingshot champion "The Eynon Aggressor" Ben Whitaker claimed runnerup honors with "The Wild, Wild West" Nathan West racing to a solid third place. Rookie Slingshot campaigner "The Electric Man" Colin White was fourth and the "Branchville Bullet" Kyle Rutledge completed the top five.
POCO-NOTES:
The quick hitting rainstorm once again showed the perseverance of the Hamlin staff and the great racers who compete there. Once the rain ceased, the Hamlin crew quickly went to work on the speedway and a tip of the fedora to all of the Slingshot drivers who went "muddin" to help whip the track back into racing condition. The rain helped add a third lane to the racing surface and the drivers were quick to take advantage of the additional real estate afforded to them.
Heat racing action at Hamlin has always proved to be like mini-feature events and last night was no exception to the rule. Jenna Schostkewitz and Eddie Strada were heat winners and in the first heat, Danny Buccafusca established a new track record for the Juniors at 14.466 seconds per lap. The win for Strada is even more amazing due to the fact he was competing in only his second race since the purchase of the race car from Aaron Henneforth. Mark Berkenstock was the winner of the 600 Wingless rookie heat event. Troy Langendorfer, Nathan West and Ben Whitaker claimed wins in the Regular Slingshot heats that also saw Cuddebackville, New York racer Mike Horton make his start of the season at Hamlin. Newcomer David Ahner captured the heat win for the 270 Micro rookies. 600 Wingless Micro heats were claimed by Alex Curley, Brett Michalski and Bobby Butler and Super Slinger heats went to Tommy Vroom and Dale Kober. Vroom broke the existing track record for the Super Slingers in his heat as he lowered the new standard to 13.928 seconds. Four heats were required for the 270 Micros and the winners were Gene Burd, Nunzi Allegrucci, "Hurricane" Harlee Schaffer and Ed Kenderdine. Two consolation events were required and Rob Pajauis and Jamie Czekai claimed the wins.
Fast time awards for the initial event of the Micro feature were put by dickie Keiper Racing Supplies and Gene Burd set the fast time and was awarded $50.00 for his efforts. Second fast timer Robbie Watson and third place man Todd Bertrand each claimed $25.00 prizes for their efforts.
Despite the fact the PA Speedweeks began for the 600's, another great field of racers were on hand for the event showing the evidence of the growing strength of non-wing racing in the Eastern portion of the country.
Weis Supermarkets has been operating successful grocery stores in a five state area since 1912. The Sunbury based retailer has grown to 165 stores since the purchase of the Mr Z's and King's Supermarkets in the late 90's and owns another 30 stores under the pet theme name of Superpetz. With many in-house labels such as Weis Quality, From the Field, Big Top, Carnival and Dutch Valley, Weis Markets has grown to be among the leaders in the vast supermarket industry today. Weis employs 16,600 people and the strong community ties have developed the sponsorship support and opportunities for the Hamlin Speedway. Through the sponsorship, there will be bike giveaways and face painting and an opportunity to win race tickets to the upcoming ARCA event at the Pocono International Speedway. Megan Ammirato has helped develop the partnership the speedway hopes will be in place for many years to come.
