HAMLIN SPEEDWAY NEWS
Hamlin, PA - Hamlin Speedway Premiers New Divisions At Season Opener With 125 Entries On S&S Speedways Night
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Promoters Randy and Denise Smith ushered in the new era of racing for the Hamlin Speedway last evening when they welcomed 125 talented racers from a five state area to their premier short track facility located in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. A good sized opening night crowd braved near frigid temperatures to witness the sizzling on track racing action at the speedway that at times had some scattered snow flurries sprinkling the speedway grounds during the events. The racing was completed at 9:45 and when was all said and done seven happy winners found there way into victory circle. For the Smith Family it marks the beginning of the their fifth season in control of the Hamlin facility they painstakingly resurrected in 2006 after the speedway abruptly closed in the middle of the 2005 racing season. The great racing action and the tremendous support of the racing community lends credence to the fact the speedway has a great following and the 2010 racing season has all indications for being another banner year for the Smith Family.
An extended hot lap session was given to the great field of cars on hand as many new names dotted the entry list for the evening events. Heat racing action was tight and former kart star "The Code-Man" Kody Welsh kicked off the action by a scoring a heat race win his very outing in his new division. "Slick" Rick Raisner gave a good indication of things to come by scoring a win in the second heat. Blairstown, New Jersey's Jacob Hendershot was quick from the word go as he captured the heat win in the Rookie 270's. Two heats were run for the Rookie 600's and Kim Tabershofer captured the win in heat number one and former National Junior Slingshot Champion, "The Goshen Gladiator" Joey Kata scored the win in the second heat. Super Slinger heats were won by Dale Reed and defending track champion Dale Kober. The 270 heat action found the birthday boy "Double M" Matt Mountz securing a win in the first and two time track champion Nunzi Allegrucci victorious in the second. Hard riding Jeff Schall captured the first heat in the 600 competition and newcomer Jimmy Glenn won the second. Rob Vivona had his new ride working to perfection as he scored a win in the third heat making it a clean sweep for the State of New Jersey with the three 600 heat winners. The regular Slingshots took to the track for their heat races and Dale Kober doubled up by capturing the first heat event and last season's Junior Slingshot Champion Justin "The Jet" Brewster was on the money as he captured his first heat race win in his new division of racing endeavors. "Double J" Jimmy Johnston captured the third heat.
The hot heat race action set the tone for the seven feature events following. The starting field of 13 Junior Slingshots got off to a great start with Ricky Raisner getting off to a great start and rim rode the outside line to take the lead over Welsh coming out of turn two. Once in front, Raisner kept turning consistent laps of 15.207 second laps to take the win over Welsh in the 20 lap event. "The Little Tornado" Zack Weisenfluh was third with "The Midget" Chris Kurtz and the "Rockaway Rocket" Danny Buccafusca completing the top five.
Rookie feature events followed and Jacob Hendershot wasted no time in getting to the front as he led the field into turn one and never looked back in scoring the opening night win in the 270 Rookies. Glenn Macomber, in his first ever Hamlin start was in for the runnerup role with Jeffrey Anderson, Kyle Rutledge and Trevor Dunn following. The Rookie 600's saw the new "Wild Child" Brian Gilmore jump into the lead at the opening bell and drive away from the field in his first feature event in his new division. Kim Tabershofer did excellent work with her second place performance and Alex Curley made the trip down from Massachusetts a good one as he scored a third place finish in his first ride in the 600's. Defending Slingshot track champion, "The Factoryville Flyer" Billy Clark was fourth in his first attempt and Koey Kata raced his way from 14th starting position to complete the top five running order.
The Super Slinger feature had Mathew Langbein in front for the first nine laps of the event with Dale Kober applying pressure on his teammate "The Rentalist" Mike Pontrelli to slip into the runnerup slot and then throwing the book at Langbein in an effort to get by. Finally Kober was able to make the clean pass off of turn two on lap 10 to take control of the event and go on to win the feature. Langbein did a great job in finishing second with Dale Reed, Jimmy Johnston and Pontrelli completing the top five in an event that saw 17 cars starting the event.
Hellertown's Kurt Bettler juimped out into the lead at the start of the 270 main event. Catching traffic as early as the ninth lap, Bettler attempted to lap another car when the two made contact and found them bringing out the first caution in the event. Matt Mountz inherited the lead and led the ramaining laps despite constant pressure from second place man Allegrucci. "Flyin" Ryan Smith was third with Robbie Watson and "Jumpin" Joe Smith completing the top five.
The 600 feature saw Jeff Schall set a blistering pace with Allan Kellogg, Jason Van Doren and Keith McIntyre in pursuit. Kellogg tried the top-side between turns one and two on lap-3 and allowed McIntyre to slip by. Meanwhile, Branchburg, New Jersey's Jimmy Glenn was finding the inside line to his liking as he closed on the pair. Schall went wide off of turn two and McIntyre seized the opportunity to take control of the event. The lead was short-lived as Glenn found the sweet spot in the speedway and reeled in McIntyre and eventually took conrol of the lead. McIntyre abruptly came to a stop a lap later ending his night. The tight competition at the speedway proved to be the focal point leading up to the end of the event as Schall never gave up and began to seek a way around Glenn. The pair of Garden Staters duked it out turn after turn and Schall decided to go topside and made the pass of Glenn coming out of turn two but left the door open in turn three and Glenn seized the moment to slide back into the lead. Glenn went on to win the event with Schall in the runnerup role and Stan "The Man" Tykarski in third with Ryan Smith fourth and another 600 rookie Kyle "The Hot" Lick completing the top five.
The Slingshot feature saw Nazareth's Jeff Cosgrove take the lead at the start with Justin Brewster in hot pursuit. The rookie Brewster had a fast hot rod under him and moved to the top of the raceway and found the power to pull up along side of Cosgrove and edge his way into the lead. A couple of top contenders Kyle Rode and Bobby Van Blarcom saw their efforts vanish when involved in a skirmish and done for the evening.
Brewster went for the win with John Pantis in for the runnerup role and Cosgrove was third with Rich Van Orden and Dale Kober completing the top five running order. The order of finish is revised from the Quick Results sent out last evening.
POCO-NOTES:
The new era of racing that began last evening at Hamlin may just well be the sign of the times and the futre for the sport. With the bigger car divisons pricing themselves out of the reach of the pockets for the average working family, the small car divisions present to the racers the opportunity to go racing well within their means and to travel to many of the smaller divisions speedways that don't require an overnight stay at a hotel. The excitement generated from opening night will carry on throughout the season and will keep the fans coming back for more.
The extensive work Randy Smith and his staff did over the winter months provided the racers with a multi-lane race track to do their work in. The new clay surface held up well during the program and the wider channels made for some excellent side by side racing and the racers all agreed the track was in excellent shape and fast.
The draw of racing equipment to the Pennsylvania facility has far reaching effects as the New England contingent was strong with Alex Curley, Jimmy Santamaria and Mick D'Agostino on hand and the New York area brought the talented Chris Stockham in for the evening and Stockham was racing well until sidelined by mechanical problems. The Southern Tier of New York was well represented with many of the young racing stars at the speedway hailing from the Ulster, Sullivan and Orange counties of New York.
The beginning of the new season at any speedway is special and Hamlin was no exception to the rule. The fans had the opportunity to check out the many new paint schemes and graphics of the cars on hand and with two new divisions it is sometimes hard to acquire all of the information regarding the drivers who are joining the racing activity for the first time. All information should be secured within the first two weeks of the racing season.
Kyle Rutldge had both his Slingshot and 600 car in action and his sister Kim did her usual tremendous job at belting out her great rendition of the national Anthem to kick off the program. Tex Snyder had his racer on hand and the 69 year old competitor was doing well until soe moke began to billow from under the hood. 2008 track and national slingshot champion The "Eynon Agressor" Ben Whitaker borrowed one of the Clark Garage entries for the evening but encountered some problems hindering his evening. "The Electric Man" Colin White and Bradley Crouse both made the leap into the Regular Slingshot division as did go kart convert Jess Benke and all three competed in the feature event. Former WKA Tour go karter Geordan Farry took her first ride in the 600 Rookies and was 7th and past Hamlin track regulars Mark Berkenstock, Shannon Smith and Ryan Wood all have rides for the new 600 division. Ben Quinones was on hand for the vening but was an early retiree. Danielle dickinson made the leap from Junior Slingshots to the 600's and admits the new racer is a learning experience as she gets used to the additional power and handling characteristics of the new equipment. Mackenzie Tresch did likewise as she took the leap from the Kid Karts to the Junior Slingshots and did well in her first race in just trying to figure out the bigger race car. Matt Massone, who did his racing elsewhere in the past, is making Hamlin his home track in 2010 and is a welcome addition to an already stout field of slinsgshots. John Bockhorn will aso be making Hamlin his homne track in 2010 as the Bloomindale, New Jersey resident embarks on the new season.
