Everything in the universe goes in cycles. The moon around the Earth. The Earth around the sun. Seasons change from spring to summer, fall, winter, and back to spring. What is new is old and old is new and so goes the sport of auto racing.
Auto racing which started out at the local Fairs and evolved into the major sport it is today is also facing changes and may be recycling to it’s past. Skyrocketing costs have put the sport out of reach of most people and it now belongs to the high dollar teams. This can be seen by looking at the dwindling car counts and empty grandstands at many of the big car racetracks.
On the contrary the small car tracks are thriving even in these hard economic times. With full pit areas and grandstands at tracks like Borgers Speedway the writing just may be on the wall. The attraction is simple. The Micros-Sprints, Stage One Modifieds, and Slingshots can put a person in the driver’s seat at a fraction the cost of a full size car. It is making it possible for people that could only sit in the grandstands and hope to race now climb behind the wheel. The racing is every bit and in many cases more exciting and competitive then the big cars and fans can also watch the races at a fraction of the cost.
The Borgers Speedway promoters are bringing racing back to it’s roots at the West End Fair Nationls on Thursday August 27 during the West End Fair. It is a bold undertaking that has not been done before in the Northeast. The New Reading Fair has been running a successful Slingshot show during their Fair but the Borgers crew is taking it a major step further at the West End Fair. A full program of 270 and 600 Micro-sprints, Stage One Modifieds, and Slingshots will take to the 1/6 mile dirt oval under the lights during the Fair. The “Cream of the Crop” in the sport will be competing in this first ever event. With the 3500 seat covered grandstand that is expected to be packed with screaming race fans this could be the biggest exposure that small car racing has ever seen.
The clock is ticking and the excitement is growing with less then two weeks until race day. Pack up the family and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the West End Fair and as the sun goes down and the Stars of Micro, Stage One Modified, and Slingshots racing rise and shine on the track you will be a part of “History In The Making.”
