Fields Continue To Grow At WVMP, Competition Heats Up!
As the number of entries in several classes continue to grow at Wyalusing Valley, the competition is really heating up. This week's Insinger Race Fuels Day saw some great action in the kart divisions, but late day showers put a halt to the program before the 600 Micros or the Junior and Senior Slingshot Tours could get any qualifying in.
Kara Chapman bested a 9 car field in Rookie Purple, inheriting the lead from Matt Addona on lap 2 after he and Ryan Funk came together in turn 2. While Chapman methodically clicked off laps, Addona and Funk charged through the pack. Their quest to catch the leader ran out of time, and they had to settle for 2nd and 3rd respectively ahead of Kamdin Maby and Craig Smith.
Dom Roger led a 9 car Novice Blue field to the green and held the point for the first 2 circuits, but Casey Steinhoff made the winning pass on lap three. Behind Steinhoff, the racing was intense as several drivers ran in tight formation. At the checkers, Roger held on for 2nd, ahead of Skylar Middendorf, Hayden Baumunk, and Jared Zionkowski.
Brianna Baumunk led 14 of 15 laps in the Junior Gold feature, holding off the dominant driver of the division so far this season, Collin Hadlock.. Nick Funk took third after a spirited battle with Hadlock.
The SportsKids division continues to grow, resulting in some very exciting and unpredictable racing. Nick Funk held the lead for the first half of the event, but Brianna Baumunk rocketed from her 6th place starting spot and snatched the point away on lap 8. Funk retained 2nd, with some consistently improving rookies in Derek Frederick, Sam Murray, and Josh McMicken completing the top 5.
As the song says, “When you're hot, you're hot!”. Sportswomen found none other than Brianna Baumunk in victory lane, taking her 3rd win of the day over Dawn Roberts, Heather Hadlock, and Krissy Baldwin.
Burt Maynard captured his first career win, earning the Sportsman spoils over Cody Fassett, Matt Roberts, Dustin Fassett, and Kyle Traver. Maynard led the entire distance of the 15 lap affair.
Matt Roberts and Derek Chapman continued to duel in the Animal Heavy division. The two very evenly matched drivers put on a great show for the win. This time, it was Roberts coming out on top. Chapman earned 2nd, with Bob Coveney taking 3rd.
Very close racing in the mediums ended up with Tyler Chapman once again victorious. Duane White and Dalton Maynard kept the pressure on early in the event, but under a lap 7 caution, Maynard's best run of the season would fall by the wayside with mechanical problems. On the restart, Paul Crambo joined the mix and began to pressure White for 2nd. He made the pass on the final lap and took the spot. White held on for 3rd over Dylan Maynard and Kayla Wilkins.
Duane White led most of the Heavies feature as the racing behind him became very intense. Point leader Mike Ely patiently picked off a car here and there, getting by Crambo on lap 11. On lap 13, Ely drove to the outside of White, completing the impressive outside pass to steal the win. Crambo tried a last corner pass on Ely, but spun coming to the line. White made it past for 2nd, but Tyler Chapman was unable to avoid and was collected by Crambo's machine. While great presence of mind, he focused on crossing the finish line and was credited with 3rd place. Chris Shaffer wound up 4th, with Harry Ely Jr. rounding out the top 5.
Slingshot and 600 micro practice went off without a hitch, but as the first 600 micro heat took the green flag, a light shower began to fall, which sent the cars to the pits. The track made every effort keep the track surface worked in, but the showers persisted. Radar showed no window on the way, so the decision was made to pull the plug. The senior slingshot and 600 micro events will not be rescheduled. The junior slingshot national tour event has been rescheduled for August 16th, being run in conjunction with WVMP's 2nd scheduled senior mid-atlantic tour event.
WVMP will be silent this weekend in observance of the Independence Day holiday, but will return to action on July 12th with Z's Repair Service Little League Day. A regular show of racing along with Twin 20's will be held for the 600cc Micros. All ball players wearing their team cap or shirt will be admitted FREE, along with their parents! Each player will also get a FREE hot dog and drink!
Have a safe and fun holiday everyone, and we hope to see you back at the “Nightmare of the Northern Tier” on July 12th!
