Young Gun 390's Ride Into Wyalusing Valley, Dan Souder Rides Away Victorious.
Youth and family took center stage Sunday at Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park as the Young Gun 390 Series made it's first ever appearance at the Northern Tier facility. The event was the final race in the YG390's "Speedweeks", which saw the 10-15 year old pilots run 4 races in as many days.
Dan Souder rode off into the sunset with the checkered flag, winning the heat and leading the entire main event. Behind him, the racing was spectacular as Madison Brensinger, Nathan Prazenica, and Matt Campbell all took their turn in 2nd place. Running all over the track, pulling off slide jobs, and occasionally brushing the wall, the three put on a great show. Steven Sacks, who started 6th after suffering substantial damage to his machine following a practice indicent, looked to be on a mission from the start as he jumped to 3rd on the start. His day would end as disappointingly as it began, however, as he slammed the turn 4 concrete coming to the checkers and took a wild ride across the infield. At the checkers it was Souder, Campbell, Prazenica, Brensinger, Sacks, and T.C. Moore.
Sunday also marked the first race in the "Fountain of Youth" Jr. Slingshot series. 5 youngsters made the trip up, and when the checkers fell, the winner was no stranger to WVMP's victory lane. Young Jacob Hendershot, a many time feature winner in the novice blue caged class in 2007, took top honors over Joseph Kata, Molly Chambers, Matt Sobiech, and Austin Barucky.
Bob Maynard took the 270 Micro win with Jerry Traver, Greg Steward, Henry Brown, and Mark Wurzler completing the top 5.
Corey McCarthy captured another slingshot win over Randy Leuthe, who made his first appearance at WVMP in a beautiful machine, and Byron Worthing, son of well known dirt mod ace, the "Junkyard Jet”, Doug Worthing.
Kart racing was truly a family affair, as Kara, Derek, and Tyler Chapman, as well as Brianna, Karen, and Kevin Baumunk all took home wins.
Hayden Baumunk appeared to be on his way to his first ever win in Rookie Purple, leading from the drop of the green to lap 10 while point leader Dom Rogers and Kara Chapman both took turns in 2nd. Chapman, also looking for her first win in 3 years of trying, took the lead from Baumunk on lap 11 and took the popular win over Baumunk and Rogers.
Just when it seemed the Novice Blue division could not get any more exciting, it did. The field, running very close together, went through the early and middle stages of the race without incident. Dayton Cote, who has been on a tear of late, led with Skylar Middendorf stalking him in 2nd. Rookie Alex Shaffer ran 3rd, with Calvin Halm and John LaBarr swapping 4th. A caution for Halm's spun machine on lap 13 set up a 2 lap dash that proved to be a great battle. The field entered turn one on the restart close enough to share the same blanket, with Cote and Middendorf both driving in deep and slipping up the banking enough to allow Shaffer to get by for the lead. The jumble in the front resulted in Halm's machine spinning once again, negating Shaffer's pass and setting up another green/white/checkered finish. This time, Middendorf was able to make the pass in turn one, taking Shaffer along for 2nd. Middendorf held on for the win, with Cote regaining 2nd, LaBarr making the pass for 3rd,
Jay Adams won once again in Jr. Gold over Shelby Halm, with Derek Chapman running with them and scoring the Adult Caged win.
Adams domination in the SportsKID division was snapped by Brianna Baumunk. Adams took second, ahead of heat winner Jake Maynard.
Karen Baumunk was credited with the SportsWOMAN win, as the only entry. However, she requested to run with the SportsMAN class rather than run alone. 3 first time SportsMAN drivers also took to the track, including Tom Tesluk and Kevin Ayres, both making their first ever racing start, and Asphalt standout driver Wayne Lent. Kevin Baumunk set sail, taking his second win in a row. Behind him, Tesluk held 2nd for the distance by a slight margin over a battling Karen Baumunk, Ayres, and Lent. Ayres made several bids at 3rd, but dropped to 5th after a failed attempt to take the spot on lap 13. Exiting turn 4 for the checkers, Lent and Karen Baumunk made contact, with Baumunk spinning and Lent getting into the wall. Ayres made a nice move to aboid and came away with 3rd. Lent was 4th, and Karen Baumunk was scored separately as a SportsWOMAN entry.
Excellent car counts in lights, mediums, and heavies also produced some great racing. Tyler Chapman led the lights feature until Kecia Wilkins made her way past on lap 9. Chapman took the lead back on lap 10, but Paul Krambo took a shot at the lead in turn one and ran out of room, sending Chapman's machine spinning. Krambo was sent to the rear along with Chapman, and racing resumed with Duane White hold the top spot. White took the win, with Chapman rebounding for 2nd ahead of Derek Conrad, Kayla Wilkins, Kecia Wilkins, and Krambo.
White led the 10 car medium feature to the green and led lap 1, but Tyler Chapman made it past on lap 2. White spun on lap 3, setting a up an intense battle for 2nd between Dalton Maynard, Brian Mroz, and Dylan Maynard. All 3 fought a hard battle, and at the checkers it was Chapman, Mroz, Dylan Maynard, Duane White, and Dalton Maynard.
9 Heavies took the green, with Keith Atkinson taking the win. Cliff Casterline, starting scratch in Tyler Chapman's #88 after his own machine suffered engine woes, took 2nd. Harry "Beaver" Ely took 3rd in his first 2008 outting, with Mike Ely and Jay Abbott
Next weekend, "The Nightmare of the Northern Tier" will hold a regular show, including the 600cc Micros, and the first ever appearance of the 125cc microsprints. The action is really heating up, so don't miss a single lap as the drivers go head to head, wheel to wheel, at Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park! For more information, visit www.wvmpracing.com!
