Slingshots Play Expanded Role at Atlantic City
For the third consecutive year, Slingshot by Tobias competitors have been invited to Atlantic City to participate in the "Indoor Race" at the Boardwalk Hall. The event is scheduled for January 20 & 21, 2006.
This year, the Slingshots will expand their role at the Atlantic City Indoor Race. As in the past, the Slingshots will compete in heat races on Friday night; in an attempt to transfer into Saturday's feature race. Saturday's feature race will follow "Fan Fest" and the 2005 Briggs & Stratton Power Products/Slingshot by Tobias Awards Ceremony. Rich Tobias, Jr. and Speedway Entertaiment will be fielding several "House Cars" for competition. Tobias' drivers list currently includes dirt modified standout, Doug Hoffman and USAC Silver Crown star (former "Hoosier 100" winner) Gary Heiber. Other names will follow...
The "Young Lions" will again showcase their talents on Saturday afternoon, with their own feature race. The "Young Lions" age limit has been dropped to 12 years old (maximum age remains at 16).
Slingshot competitors and teams are solely responsible to adhere to all New Jersey State racing regulations and any specific rules for this event. There will be mandated safety equipment requirements for this event. Please contact Area Auto Racing News at www.aarn.com for any event rules clarifications. All Speedway Entertainment sanctioned Slingshot by Tobias rules will be in effect.
Myerstown, PA – Rich “Toby” Tobias, Jr. will honor the memory of recently deceased racer, J.J. Michaels, during the upcoming Atlantic City Indoor Race. Rich is the founder of the cost effective Slingshot by Tobias division and in the past, he has fielded “House Cars” for the event. The Tobias entered cars have been driven by the likes of Billy Pauch, Lenny Boyd, and Jack Arute; with their share of the purse going to charity.
Tobias will donate the winnings garnered by one of his cars to the Michaels family. The car will be painted yellow, sporting the familiar #31. “I just thought this would be a good way to remember a great racer. I know that he comes from a racing family and I can relate to that”, stated Tobias. “I only raced against him when I went to Fulton (Speedway) for Victoria 200, but he seemed to be a strong runner.” Rich has yet to announce the driver that will wheel the tribute car.
J.J. Michaels was a popular and well respected Central New York racer. Michaels claimed the 1993 “Outlaw” Modified Series Championship, 1994 Weedsport Speedway 358 Modified Championship, and the 1998 Utica-Rome Speedway Track Championship. J.J. totaled 49 feature wins during his dirt modified career. Michaels was 43 when he succumbed to a heart related illness on November 14, 2005.
